Any Single Mom Hopefuls in LA (Westside)? Let's Share The Journey
Hello, I'm graduating to IUI after 2 ICI attempts. Doing this solo, would love to connect with anyone in LA (I'm in Santa Monica) going through the similar process. Let's meet and support each other, sharing our learnings, tips, experience.
Re: Male Infertility
Hello. I have a similar situation in terms of zero sperm count. After a year of really trying my husband got tested and discovered due to a chromosomal abnormality that he doesn't produce enough sperm to detect in a semen analysis. The doctor said that we could get a biopsy to see if they could find some sperm cells in his testes. However, the doctor stressed that if they find sperm cells there's no guarantee that they will be of good enough quality to fertilize eggs with IVF and we would lose 20k from the IVF process. In addition, the biopsy would be painful. My husband decided that the emotional toll of first hoping they find cells, then hoping they fertilize, then hoping the embryos don't have another problem was just not worth it to him. He also decided it made no sense to spend all that money on a hope when we could have a pretty much guaranteed child for a fraction of the costs. 3 cycles of IUI is still cheaper than 1 IVF cycle plus I wouldn't need my body to go through the IVF process. The end result is a healthy baby and using donor sperm with IUI he gets to be a part of the entire process from conception. My husband came to this decision sooner than i did. I needed time to let go of my dream of having a biological child with my husband. To him the most important part of this whole process is that he has a child to love.
donor 15058
I was lucky enough to have a beautiful, healthy, and little girl by this donor wanted to know if she had any siblings out there.
Re: Successful ICI?
Since this didn't get a response, I will answer my own question haha ! I was able to get pregnant on my 2nd cycle of frozen ICI using a CCB donor. There are not a ton of ICI stories out there, so thought I would share some tips. I am not a doctor or medical professional, so this is only anecdotal!
Some tips:
- Use two vials if possible. Frozen sperm does not live as long as fresh so it is important to get timing right. I inseminated 12 & 36 hours after LH surge using a Mira analyzer mostly (I also tested with OPKs).
- I bought and used a Mira Analyzer. It is a little expensive, but it definitely helped me understand my cycle better.
- I took prenatals for 5 months before inseminating the first time.
- I personally stopped drinking. This is debated a bit, but we are spending so much $$ on sperm, I did not want to risk it.
- We thawed the sperm using a water bath we bough on Amazon. Set it to 37 degrees Celsius and thawed for 5 minutes instead of just leaving to get to room temp on the counter. There are some scientific studies that outline motility being better in water baths, but this is debated a bit online.
- I used a TENS machine on my lower abdomen for a week up to my insemination. It is supposed to bring blood flow to the uterus almost like acupuncture would. Do not use after the insemination as it send electric waves to the muscle.
- A lot of people online say to use pre-seed lube and flex discs after inseminating. I personally didn't at the advice of my OBGYN. Flex discs don't fit to my body comfortably. And pre-seed should only be used if you are not creating enough cervical mucus.
- The biggest tip I think is to have multiple orgasms if you can! I had 2 right after inseminating, and another 2 20-30 mins later while I was laying horizontal with pillows propping my butt up. I made sure to get "aroused" beforehand.
Happy to answer any questions if there are any. Obviously I am just one data point, but I wanted to share in case there are women out there that are thinking about ICI!
Re: Second IUI Worked! 15130
We determined my “peak days” using the Clearblue Fertility Monitor. It tells you to test everyday for 10 days in a row, starting around a week after your period starts. My peak days were days 15-16 of my cycle.
We had a baby boy he was born January 17th, and is now 6 months old! I couldn’t love anyone more than I love this little man.
The last two months of my pregnancy were rough.. I had preterm contractions for the last 9 weeks of it, about every 2-5 min apart, but they weren’t making me dilate. They put me on medication to help keep the contractions at bay until I was 37 weeks. After that, I just had to deal with feeling like I was constantly in labor, until 39 weeks. Then they induced labor so I would actually start dilating. Two miserable days later... I went into labor.
Things got a bit scary for a little bit because the cord was around his neck. Every time I pushed his heart rate would drop. My doctor was moments away from using suction to get him out, but I was determined to not let her do that. Finally he came out, and I tore like crazy... (TMI, I know..) we stayed at the hospital for 3 days after I had him. My son was fine, but the epidural was taking longer to wear off than normal, and my left leg would give out every time I tried standing. Recovery was pretty rough for me, but my wife is incredibly supportive and she’s been through this herself twice, so she helped me in ways most husbands wouldn’t understand.
As tough, and traumatic as this experience was, I’m so glad I did it. And I would go through it all again for this little guy.
Re: 1st ICI home attempt tonight
My wife and I decided to start the process as well during my early July ovulation window. We hadn't seen any doctors nor taken any medication. We just wanted to start on our own first before jumping into anything else, that might not even be needed. I am not sure what you mean about Cryobank not sending 'supplies'? When we got our tank, they also included little syringes that worked to just 'suck up the sperm' and then insert it directly into my vagina and that was that. They were by no means magnum size, so what it might lack in one arena, it certainly delivered in the functional part! I had started BBT tracking about a month prior so I had some data to leverage and used an OPK in June to get a baseline of timing. So, we ordered 3 vials for at-home ICI about 4 days before my expected ovulation. Luckily, I had the luxury of an 'ovulation dip' with my BBT and so that was the first day we used a vial and then one more the next day when I had my LH surge and then again the next day which was my actual ovulation. Fast forward to the afternoon of 9DPO and I took my first pregnancy test and it was POSITIVE! Very faint, but there was a line! The next morning, 10DPO, we used two different pregnancy test brands and two more +'s! For good measure, we did it again this morning, 11 DPO, with two more different types of tests, and more +'s...no turning back now! Oh, and three days after my ovulation I turned 37, so hope is out there!
