Anyone doing/planning IUI advanced maternal age?

Hi,

I was planning on beginning the IUI process imminently, but have suffered a back injury. I will be 39 in May and I am obviously concerned about my age and conceiving via IUI, looking for any stories, info, suggestions from others who are there or have been there :)

    Im 38, will be 39 in july, im looking to conceive in the next few months. My wife and partner is 47. We had some fears w our age, but feel we r both in a great place finncially and emotionally, so we've learned to focus on he positives of being older parents. Most of our friends r straight w kids and spend alot of time w us, and they too have said the same thing, we r in a good place and both want a child.

    My partner worries about being too tired.

    I suffer from high blood pressure and am on meds that have been slowly reduced in dosage. Eventually off them or switched to one that is ok wpregnancy. This has been my main concern. I am not obese, just slightly abou 10 pounds over weight, so the high blood pressure is not from an unhealthy lifestyle.

    Other than that i was jut concerned w bringing in a child to this world not knowing who their father is until hey r 18. We asked a friend to donate who said no (which we supported) so now we r faced w using a stranger.


    Other than thr high blood pressure my dr said there shouldnt be any concerns w conceiving w y age. But if i obecome pregnant i will be high risk and be monitored more closley.

    I am going to by 41 in May and hopefully will start my shots this month. My doctor told me that fertility varies from person to person so a person at our age can have the same exact issue as some one who is much younger.

    My only concern with my age is my/our ability to conceive. My wife and I have always wanted to parent and though there will be many challenges and I'm sure we'll be exhausted at times, we want a family that includes children. We would each like to conceive and share the pregnancy experience. She is 3 years younger than me, so logically we decided I'd try first. However, I'm healing from a back injury and that has delayed the process. We also lost our known donor after he saw the official paperwork, so now it's anonymous for us. My OB/GYN has suggested an HSG and an endometrial biopsy prior to starting the process. He has also suggested 3 IUIs per cycle every other day based on ovulation and the use of Clomid for 3 months and if no success, then he would suggest I move to the RE...and everything that entails. What does that sound like to you?...

    I am healthy, though overweight with a minor thyroid condition that is under control...and a regular(30) cycle and postive opks for the last 4 months I've tested. We also plan on using a younger donor based on some research I came across.

    Still looking to share stories about ttc with women over 38...using their own eggs and frozen sperm?....

    You hear soooo much negativity :(

    Don't let everything get you down. I am going to be 41 this month and I actually just did my 1st IUI cycle yesterday with a second one today and god willing it will work. I know plenty of people over the age of 40 who have conceived naturally and some who have conceived with fertility treatment. I think the older we get it is easier to identify what the fertility issue so it can be treated (although it may be harder). In my case I had endometriosis, fibroids, all of which had to be surgically removed. I had a low FSH, very low egg reserve and follicles. However, at my clinic there was a young lady who was 31 with the same exact issue so it can vary from person to person. In regard to you using a known donor, my wife and I wanted to do the same thing however, with our age every day is crucial and the amount of time to have the donor medically cleared it too long of a wait. You are talking 3-6 months and in my state NY it is a 6 month clearance. So we purchased frozen sperm and took a leap of faith. I think first and foremost you have to stay positive. Stop reading negative stories on the internet/books. You don’t need any added negativity. Don’t focus on the weight I am tiny and I am having issues! Start taking vitamins that can assist you and change your diet to proteins, grains, etc. Stay away from alcohol, smoking, try to get rest and you never know this might be just what you need. I read this book Getting Pregnant by Niels H Lauersen. He discusses everything including what vitamins to take and diet suggestions etc. You might find that helpful.

    I started taking Vitafol One prenatal pills about a month before I was going to begin treatment. I also asked if there were any vitamins that can assist strengthening my eggs so I also began taking Vitamin D, Dhea, and CoQ10, then when I was able to do treatment. I took shots (Gonal F) followed by the Overdrel the day before my two consecutive IUIs. Crossing my fingers it works.

    I too am 40 had first IUI and now the waiting game. We r here to support one another, so think positive, think u r already pregnant and don't let stress take over. I did Genera for 4 days then profasi day before insemination she then did another one next day. I produce 2 follicles and now injected progesterone vaginal for next 2 weeks. I am sending ALL of u baby energy. (LoL). I had a HSG as well, everything looked fine, so Recommend that highly.

    Just found out I have basically zero infertility coverage. So, I have 6 tries with clomid and regular iuis, wish me luck!!! NO injectables, no advanced procedures, no ivf! Ladies with good insurance thank your lucky stars!

    Yeah we pay out of pocket. Took a FSA (flexible spending account) and send in receipt fir reimbursement. Is that an option for u?

    Tlk....have u been tested for infertility and know you have problems? Dont assume just because of your age you are going to have problems. I will be 39 in July, but mt first iui is tomorrow. No fertility meds. I was on the pill for years for endometriosis so it took 6 cycles before i started ovulating, but now we just use a fertility monitor and we r good to go. No meds or anything needed at this point. Stay positive, although i know you have a million thoughts running through your mind and are being hard on yourself w every choice...believe me i ve been there and still drive myself nuts. But just because you are a certain age doesnt mean automtically u will have problems. Good luck, my wife and i r in nj in morris co. You cant be that far w 20 miles outside nyc.

    TLK they have grants online that you can apply for and get an IVF for free. I personally have not done the research but I had a friend who got it paid for that way.

    Hello Ladies,

    Indigoo how did your IUI go?
    i hope you all have good news.

    My partner is 38 and her doc, said her uterus and overies are younger and healthy. Don't be afraid with the age. More and more people are having kids after 37 and they are perfectly healthy. 2 of my friends had their first at 37 and one had her second at 40. My mom had me at 43 and I'm the most normal one of all! :) When we started the process our doc. said to start taking the prenatal many months before.

    I know there is a program at Winfertility.com that is a discount program not sure if it is only NY but it gives discounts for IUI and IVF. NY state also offers an Infertility grant program - NYS DOH infertility program. I know there are grants out there but may differ per state. I didn't qualify for anything because I did a mini stim/mini IVF and thats not a tradiationl IVF

    Hi siciliaflorez19 you are very welcome. Well a mini stim is basically fertility drugs in small dosages until the follicle gets large enough and has enough time to mature an egg. Then the egg is removed 1-2 at a time monthly. They are mixed with the sperm using ICSI and then frozen. I had 6 unsuccesful IUIS and with my age my doctor didn't want to chance doing IVF and thought this was best since i do not produce a lot of follicles. I just completed 1 cycle and they removed 3 eggs, 2 fertilized and 1 was able to be frozen. Now I start a cycle again. I am happy I have gotten to this stage though the IUIs were making me depressed. How is your journey going?

    Not sure if this helps anyone, but I got pregnant naturally with back to back IUI's at the ripe old age of 42 1/2. I had my son who is now a year old. It is possible. I did acupuncture peed on OPK's several times a day and was lucky I guess. Best thing I did. Do not let anyone tell you that you are advanced maternal age. If I was not as sick as I was for my first pregnancy Severe Pre E and HELLP, i would have done it again. I love my son and he is more important to me than giving him a sibling. Maybe I will adopt some day. Good luck.
