My husband & I were very close to purchasing vials on this donor. He is the only one that fits our criteria, ½ American, ½ Japanese to fit my husband’s ancestry. We just received the genetic testing and it turns out he was CMV Reactive. We are concerned about this. How common is it to have donor be CMV Reactive? We could not find any other donors that meet the same makeup as him but just wanted to confirm in case we missed any?

    CMV (Cytomegalovirus) is not a genetic disease. The CMV Total Antibody result can be found on each donor's profile page.

    Exposure to this virus is quite common; about 50 to 85% of people in the U.S. will test positive for a prior CMV infection. Many people who acquire CMV were never symptomatic and most people do not know whether they have ever been infected.

    It's important to note that any CCB donors listed as CMV Total Antibody "Positive" means that they have been exposed to the virus in the past and carry the antibodies. These donors did not have an active infection at the time of donation. (If an applicant or donor tests positive for an active CMV infection, he is disqualified from donating.)

    We encourage you to check with your physician before purchasing, just in case he/she plans to test you for CMV antibodies.

    Please keep in mind that in our 38 year history, we have never had a documented case of a CMV Total Antibody Positive donor transmitting the virus to a recipient or child.
