Hi,
I got my CMV results that I am CMV IgG positive and CMV IgM negative.

does this mean that I've been infected (IgG positive) before but not infected now (CMV IgM negative)?

Can I use either CMV positive or negative donor?
Is there any risk for me to use CMV positive donor?

    Excellent questions.

    Exposure to CMV is quite common; about 50-85% of people in the U.S. test positive for CMV. A person who was once infected with CMV but has fully recovered from the acute infection will be IgM negative and IgG positive. The IgG antibodies will be always be present and detectable, indicating immunity to the infection.

    Donors listed on our catalog as "CMV Total Antibody Positive" are IgM negative and IgG positive, unless otherwise stated. These donors have been exposed to the virus in the past and now carry the antibodies to the CMV virus. These donors did not have an active or recent infection at the time of donation.

    Please note that if a donor tests positive for an active CMV infection (IgM positive), he is disqualified from the program and all vials since his last negative test are destroyed.

    In our 36-year history, we have never had a documented case of a "CMV Total Antibody Positive" donor transmitting the virus to a recipient or child.

    We always recommend that you check with your physician, but if you've been exposed to CMV before and already carry the antibodies, you will most likely be able to select either type of donor.
