specimen date?

I noticed that the last two vials from my donor had the same date on the ccb barcode sticker of the vial. Does that mean that the donation came from the same date? The post-thaw properties were different on each vial, so I'm trying to understand why that could be.

    Hi Book -

    If both vials were processed the same way, there shouldn't be a major difference in the counts. It's common for labs to have 20% variations between technicians, but if both vials were collected on the same date, their counts should be the same.

    We recently got a third vial from the same donor with the same date on the barcode sticker. What does that date refer to? Even the RE said it would be remarkable for a man to maintain counts for multiple donations over a day, so we're wondering what that date is dating.

    Hi Book -

    The date on the vial is the donation date.

    A donor would only provide one donation per day, but depending on the volume, the donation usually results in a couple of vials. Most donors have to abstain for 48-72 hours in between donations in order to have the specimen quality that we require.

    Is it typical to have 5 vials from a single donation? That seems unrealistic, based on the million+ we are told is in each vial when the lab run-down is done for the iui, but we have 5 vials all with the same date on them.

    Now that we have to order more, is it possible to request that not every vial is from the same day

    Sorry, there was supposed to be a question mark on that last sentence, obviously.

    And there may have been 6 vials, in fact - we didn't see the first one we used.

    Yes, it's possible to have 5 vials or even more from a single donation. (Our Scientific/Technical Director encountered a donation that could create 14 vials.)

    For example, an ejaculate with a total count of 360 million sperm, a volume of 5 ml, and a concentration of 72 million sperm per ml could produce 5 vials.

    Our lab looks for a concentration of 40-50 million sperm per ml in an ejaculate. After sperm washing, freezing, and thawing, they ensure that there are at least 24 million motile sperm per ml, which is above our guarantee of 10 million motile sperm per IUI vial (which is typically .5 ml).

    Please keep in mind that our donors' specimen quality is above average and less than 1% of applicants actually make it into our program. All of our IUI premium vials carry the same guarantee and there is no advantage to selecting a vial from a donation that only resulted in one vial versus a donation that resulted in multiple vials because sperm concentration requirements are the same regardless of volume.
