Two different donors for the same IUI cycle?

Our first donor (2487) choice is "sold out" and has since retired. However, we do have one specimen. Here’s the problem, there is a great possibility that we will need a second specimen. Fortunately, we have a back up donor (11147) selected.

Question: Is it common for couples to use different donors for the same insemination cycle? Are we crazy for even considering it?

    Hi lax -

    Medically speaking, it is in your future child's best interest to know which donor you used. Otherwise, they will never know for sure who their donor was. This can also have other ramifications you may not want your child to have to deal with int the future. It is also important for our records to accurately track pregnancies per donor.

    You would also have to ship the specimens separately as our regulatory requiremnts prohibit us from shipping multiple donors in one tank. That will double the shipping cost.

    Why not exchange that last vial? If you are planning to purchase a second vial we may be able to waive the exchange fee (assuming the vial has not left our facility). You can email me directly at sbrown@cryobank.com if it is something you would like to consider.

    Thank you so much for your response, Scott. I think our desperation has clouded our logic. The selected donor(s) are so phenotypically different that we just assumed that if we were successful we would be able to positively identify the donor. How naïve AND selfish not to consider your points.
