What to expect?

My partner and I have been together for several years and are strongly considering using CCB to start a family. Obviously we have some questions not only about the physical issues of pregnancy, but we also have concerns about the social issues of telling family, friends, co-workers, etc. We do have a supportive doctor and are out as a couple to many people, but telling everyone about starting a family is something else all together. We come from a rather conservative state (Nebraska) so this is a significant concern for us. Are there any couples in the Omaha/Council Bluffs/Lincoln area (or anywhere) that have/are going through the same thing and have any advice or insight on what to expect?

    JD54..welcome to the boards.

    Every situation is different, but for us, we were out to our family, friends and many co-workers. We don't try to hide our lifestyle from anyone though. When we meet new people we introduce each other as "this is my partner and our child". We live in Ohio and were the first among our group of friends to have a baby together. We didn't know what to expect either, but people seem okay with it. Like I said...we are open to everyone. We have always thought like this...if we're ashamed of ourselves and try to lie about who we are, people are going to talk about us...but if we are honest about who we are, there isn't much to talk about. Secrets are hard to live with and we never want our daughter to feel as though her family life is shameful or secretive.

    Thanks for the advice! MistyandCarla, we agree with your position about openness and honesty -- it's nice to hear that kind of reinforcement from others. We appreciate the responses.

    If anyone else wants to share their advice or stories still about the experiences they have being a same-sex couple with a child, we'd love to hear it. Has anyone ever experienced anything really negative or have the responses mostly been positive?

    My partner and I have a 21 month old daughter together and a 13 yr old son that she had when she was 18. We are open and honest about our family with family friends and coworkers as well. We have not had any negative responses to our family or our new baby.

    Our 13 yr old son plays basketball and football and we have been very open up front with his teachers and coaches so they are aware of the situation. WE got positive feedback from teachers and coaches alike and several of the male coaches even took him under their watchful eye to make sure he stayed on track!

    WE have been very blessed! We know there are people that do not agree with our lifestyle, but overall we have been very accepted by the other parents and kids!
