Donor info

How much information is the donor given once he donates? Does he know his donor number or is he told about pregnancies? Does he know if/when he is selected? Would that info change if he chooses a closed profile? Thank you

  • Hi MR -

Yes, all CCB donors are given their donor number and they are aware that their specimen will result in pregnancies.

We do not disclose client information to our donors or notify them when their specimen is purchased, regardless if the donor is Anonymous or Open.

  • I don't understand something:

Some donors sell out right away and there are no more vials, ever.
Some sell out and then we get a message saying vials may be available in the future, but there's no guarantee. I thought that in this latter scenario, you get in touch with the donor and tell him to donate again. Which would go against what you wrote (that they don't know if they've been chosen)>

Can you explain please how it works when a donor sells out...then there are more vials...sells out.....then more vials. I see that happening a lot with my donor (13238). Thanks!
  • The way I understand it to work is that donors spend about a year coming in and donating and doing all of the interviews blood work etc. The vials are then put in quarantine for a time period and then released for sale if all goes well. Those sell out or don't and then the next scheduled release from quarantine happens. I believe most donors are done with their commitment before the vials even go out to be sold. When it says that there may be more released but no guarantee that is because they must test the quarantined vials before release and if something doesn't meet standards then they won't be released. A donor being brought back is called reactivation. That is when all vials are gone from the original donations but someone wants to give their child a sibling. It is very expensive as CCB must contact the donor and he must agree to it and be brought back to donate. Then it could be a year before the vials are available. He of course can refuse too. Which is why it is good to stock up because my husband and I made this mistake and our donor is retired. It can feel devastating to want another full sibling and not be able to.
  • Thanks jjr3. But that still doesn't answer my question. Some donors are on -- then sell out. Within weeks. Then THAT'S IT. It says there are no more vials left. Theres nothing to take out of quarantine.

SO my question is why do some donors sell out but then it says there IS more, and then you go the quarantined stash.

It just seems as though you have a larger supply of goods from some donors than from others.

    thanks.

  • I always assumed either the quarantined vials could not be released or what I think happens more often is a donor is really popular. If the donor hits 25 different families then they pull the donor from the pool I believe. Another thing that happens is a donor will become board popular and sell out really fast either due to pregnancy success or traits/looks. I know sometimes donors get pulled for other reason. Earlier in the year a really popular donor got pulled because it was found out he was a genetic carrier for a certain disorder so to purchase the vials you had to sign a waiver etc. I imagine sometimes a donor doesn't finish the program or stops donating or can't due to some reason. I always find it interesting what donors become popular and sell out quickly. Your donor is selling out quickly every time there is a quarantine release probably because he is so good looking. It isn't often that I see staff describing a donor as having it "going on" :) good looking donors are always really popular!
  • My guess is when there is only one batch released of that donor, assuming there are no medical issues, the donor may have stopped wanting to participate, or moved. I know that at times a batch is delayed because they are waiting for the donor to come in to do blood work. Also if there are already 25 families in the first batch they would not do another release.
  • Thanks jjr3 and Sweettheartt! makes sense!
  • Hi Paris –

CCB donors spend about one year in our donor program, however the frequency of their visits and length of time in our program may vary. In some cases, a donor may have to leave our program earlier than expected due to relocation, schedule conflicts, etc. It typically takes about a year from when a donor enters our program to when his vials are first released for purchase. At that time, there may still be vials in quarantine. If so, we must wait until the six-month quarantine period has elapsed and all necessary testing is complete. This is why some donors may have additional vial releases after their initial release. Donors with popular characteristics may sell out more quickly than donors with unique characteristics or ancestry.

Please note that we do not keep vials in quarantine due to family unit limits. Vials would still be released, but with a sibling restriction, so that only clients with a reported pregnancy from that donor would be able to purchase his vials.

Donor 13238 is still in our donor program and there is the possibility of additional vials being released in the future. However, we cannot guarantee this because it depends on future blood tests that the donor must take in order for us to release vials in quarantine. In order to ensure that you have vials available throughout your insemination process, it is recommended to purchase and store vials. We offer free storage as part of our Family Today/Tomorrow programs, since future availability can never be guaranteed. This is also important to consider if you think you may want a sibling later on.
