Why do so many people use anonymous donors?

I'm just curious because it seems like so many people pick anonymous donors. What makes you lean that way instead of an open donor. Thank you for your responses.

  • Hey there!

Well...I know that it is a very personal decision on whether to use an open or anonymous donor. First and foremost, my wife and I believe that family is created not by DNA, but rather from love. Family is about who has raised you...who has cared for you, loved you and who has been there. For us, we would not want, after 18 years, the possibility of some person who had not been a part of our child's life, to step into the picture. Now I know some people believe that every child has the right to know where they came from, will have questions, may want to meet him. I 100% agree with my child knowing where they came from. Our child will know how they were conceived from the get go, I believe in honesty. They will be told all that we know about "him". When it comes to the thought that the child will someday want to meet "him" I am not sure I agree. While I am not a child conceived through donor insemination, I do have personal experience. Let's just say that I have no desire to meet my biological father. He was no part of my life when my mom and REAL dad were busy raising me. He sure doesn't deserve me now :)
Again, I know everybody is different and everyone has their own beliefs. I think you just have to determine what is important to you...and in the end my wife and I pray that our child feels just how much we love them and doesn't feel the need to search for something more than us. I guess we will have to cross that bridge when/if it comes. We are up for any task that parenthood throws our way.

That being said....I just want to say that we are so very thankful to our CCB donor...we will forever be grateful for the gift he has given us. Giving the gift of life to people who may otherwise never be given the opportunity is absolutely the most wonderful thing one can do. Currently, my wife and I are 7.5 weeks pregnant with 12656! :)
