How many IUI's for you?

My partner and I are starting our 5th cycle for IUI. First 3 were with Clomid, 4th was with Femara, and the current cycle will be with Femara and HCG trigger shot. (we have also switched donors for this cycle) I would like to hear how many IUI's it took for you? Or at what point did you say 'enough is enough'? IVF isn't an option for us. We fortunately do have another available womb in waiting (mine)...but I know my partner really wants to carry first and I want her to have that opportunity too. But we just don't know what our limit is. I'm thinking 6 cycles?? *sigh* This is so emotionally exhausting. Really needing to hear some success stories right now.

  • I am curious how many mature follicles are you producing each month? and at what hour mark are you performing the IUI after your trigger? Just curious.

Good Luck, it will work out.
  • It was lucky number 7 for us. After fith try and clomid three times, Dr ordered ultrasound. They found ovarian cyst caused by Endo. Big shocker!! He said he would also do HSG just to clean me out. Sorry TMI. He said that we could continue what we were doing, but it would be a waste of money without lap surg. So luckily I have insurance, and by now lots of patience. The cost was still extraordinary, but I set up a payment plan w/ the hospital. Now the rest is history. You WILL find a way. Believe me! This last times, we used 100mg clomid, ultrasound, and Hcg trigger. I was very aggressive with the office. Calling constant, and even suggesting this course of action.I'm happy to say that we are now 6wks preggers. Our first ultrasound is on the 7th. More anxiety to come. It kind of sucks to still be so stressed out even though we made it this far. Those worries just intensify, but I guess it's part of the journey. Point is, it's of course possible. This is just one of many stories as I'm sure you know. It was so much more difficult then I ever imagined, but damn it feels victorious when you get what your after. Amazing feeling! Except the nausea haha. It's really important to get to know your body. I'm so grateful for the Internet, but at times you need to STOP reading. Just be you!! If you are extreme with changing everything about how you have been for years. Your body's chemistry changes too. Just making it more difficult to hone in on that hormone pattern. Also, check in with your RE office frequently. Drive them crazy. Who cares this is your dream. Your time and money!! I feel so blessed, and know what we experienced was not always the norm, but it is so worht it. Can't wait to see my Moms face in a couple if weeks! I am so cheering for you girls, because I know EXACTLY what your feeling!! Don't give up! It sill just be that much sweeter when you get your hearts desire! kit :)
  • Whoops sorry bout those typos. Byebye
  • Mashuginah- Thank you for responding. Our RE hasn't monitored anything thus far. I had to ASK for a trigger shot and ultrasound this month so we have no idea so far about follicles and size. This will be our first cycle with trigger shot and it's planned for the 8th. RE didn't tell us how long it would be after that until the IUI.

Dharmabum- Our Re hasn't given us any reasons why it hasn't worked. My partner had and HSG test last month and everything looks great. He said basically 6 IUI's then we talk about other options or at least take a break for a few months. This months we will do Femara again, but with trigger shot (plus different donor) so I'm hoping this will be the one. Thank you and good luck to you too!

Timesinfinity- Congratulations and thank you for giving me some hope! My partner already had the HCG last month and all looked perfect. The RE does ultrasounds monthly but only after the cycle has failed. She has some cysts the first month because of the fertility medication but they are now gone. I have tried to be aggressive with the RE, in fact the only reason we are trying anything different this time is because I insisted! Lol! I asked him if we could do a trigger shot or something different and he said, "Well, we can. That's what people do when they become more desperate." and I said, "Well, we're desperate!" Sheesh! We talking only two more IUI's here! Hoping this one will be different.
  • First of all I hope that anyone who tries to get pregnant will eventually find a way to have a child, by whatever means necessary.

After reading up on IUI and infertility I must admit I am shocked at how careless RE's are going about patients care. My wife is 36 and only has one ovary (both are polycystic and one was removed because of that). Our Dr has done all the lab work, ultrasounds, HSG, and is about to do they hydro(ultrasound) thing - can't think of the name - because he wants to rule out polyps...all before we get started. I don't understand why ALL dr's wouldn't check everything they possibly could before wasting people's money!!! I would be pissed if I did 5 IUI's just to find out we couldn't get pregnant because of polyps or cysts or blocked fallopian tube.

The last thing we have to check for uterine polyps - if we have them we have to get them removed first, but then we are hoping to try our first IUI late march early april regardless if we have to have the surgery or not. Our RE is going to put us on clomid, use OPK and then do ultrasounds to check follicles and if needed do the trigger shot. So all of that would be on try one.

I can't even imagine what some people have gone through, but I think with as expensive as this is, I would request my RE to be as aggressive as possible just to up the chances of pregnancy!

    Good luck to all!
  • My first iui...my re did clomid, ultrasound and hcg shot right off the rip. Unsuccessful first time but I think I misunderstood them when they told me to take the shot. My re advice was....try 3 iui's. If it doesn't work we should look into further testing on my anatomy. Trying 2nd time in march.
  • I am 33. With no health issues by the way.
  • Tommie I feel you there. Our RE found a uterine polyp in my partners uterus 7 days from our first IUI so they removed it in Jan and we just did our first IUI this month. I was unbelievable thank you that our RE offered this test and so was my wallet. I have been telling everyone I know to get their uterus checked you just never know. My partner is 32 with no known problems and we could have gone into blindly and wasted alot of time and money.
Hopefully everything turns out ok for you and Good luck to everyone.
  • *unbelievably thankful
  • our dr found a polyp on my wife too. She just had 3-4 removed today with the D and C...we have an appt this coming tuesday to start fertility drugs then 3 weeks from today we start! So we know for sure nothing will hold us back from that BFP but time
