Although the donors go through a stringent screening process which include ongoing urinalyses, blood draws, semen analyses, and physicals, we do not specifically test for drugs. (Paternal exposure to substances is not the same as maternal exposure to substances during pregnancy.) While the use of substances can affect sperm quality, that is something that we do screen for. Donors that do not have the high quality of sperm that we are looking for are eliminated from the program. It's actually very difficult to make it through the screening process, as less than 1% of applicants actually become donors.
