How much to save?

Hello Everyone!

I'm new here and am preparing myself for the process of single motherhood!! :)

I'm 34 and have always wanted a family. I have full support of my family and have started reading the boards and looking at potential donors (even though I know i'm probably a few months away...meeting with the doc in February to discuss)

Anyhow...to prepare myself, what would you say is a good amount to save up for vials/procedures? I'm looking just at AI and unsure of ICI or IUI at this point. I just want to be prepared to have enough money saved up.

Also, I see people posting that they have vials for sale? Would you buy them through CCB or from the person but it's stored at the bank?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

  • zananv welcome to the boards. Single motherhood is amazing. I welcomed a little boy 8 weeks early in Sept but he is doing awesome. These boards are good for support and so much more.

As for how much to save depends on your insurance if it covers anything or not. When I started my journey I purchased 6 vials and only used 3. I am 43 so it was awesome that I got pregnant right away. If you need meds or anything else that is something different, I didn't so that could cost.

Your doctors office should give you a break down on costs etc and then you will have an idea. Every person is different so I can not tell you. If you are having ultrasounds, etc each cost but I am unsure of how much etc. Depends on location in the country, your doctor and what their philosophy is. Mine was no meds.

Good luck and keep us up to date.
  • Welcome zananv!
How much to save is a very hard question to answer. My insurance does not cover the vials or procedures, but does cover medicine. I usually buy 3-4 vials at a time and I choose a different donor after I run out. Part of it might have to do with how set you are on a particular donor and, even though it's early to think this, if you might want a second or third child using the same donor.
  • I bought 6 vials and used all 6. Now my donor is retired so a sibling is not an option. That is something to consider. But my insurance covered a lot. They covered the procedures and meds. I just had to buy the sperm on my own.
