At home insemination

Hey everyone,
Has anyone tried inseminating at home with any success ? If so what methods are you using ? I heard that there are different ways to do this . I am very interested to hear any and all info on this. I also heard that having an orgasm before doing this is helpful not sure if this true, just very curious as to what you all think.

Thanks,
Kimberly

  • Hey there!! We to tried at home and no matter what method we tried (8 times total all diferent ways) it never worked. We finally decided to try the IUI and got preggo the first time. So in the long run the at home was MUCH more expensive! It seems as though itwould be a nice thing to have it be just your partner and you at home making a baby but honestly it wasnt worth 10 months of stress and disappointment! Hopefully this helps you! Good Luck!!!(btw fyi tried doing the orgasm thing, the put your legs in the air, the roll to each side, one cycle even inseaminated 3 different days, I went on clomid for the last 2 trys and that didnt help and we thought it was because of what the clomid did to the ph of my cervical mucus so we tryed a product called pre-seed but still no luck!!)
  • Hello Deblute,
Thanks for you reply, I was going back and forth on what to do . At home or trying with a Dr. A few yrs ago I tried iui's with my obgyn. I ended up stopping after 4 tries , my partner and I split up. Everything was getting really stressful and messy .So I took time off from trying. I'm now 40 and single and ready to start my family ! So thanks again for all the info. Congrats on your successful pregnancy and good luck !

  • Hi Kimberly,

Sorry I didn't respond sooner, but I don't frequent this board.

I can say from experience that it is totally possible to do ICI at home and be successful. I'm looking at my 2 year old daughter who is the living proof.

My wife and I did ICI at home and were successful on our first try. We are now trying for our second child.

To answer your questions, you can purchase 1cc needless syringes at a medical supply store. You also need a catheter (flexible tube) that fits on the end of the of the syringe.

Our methodology was pretty low tech, but it was suggested by the nurse at an RE's office. We did initial bloodwork and consultation and then told the RE that we wanted to try at home first, so we were given suggestions on how to do it.

-Discalimer -- This is what we did and is not suggesting that anyone should necessarily follow our protocol.

We thawed the sperm in a body-temperature water bath per the instructions, then sucked the swimmers into the syringe with the catheter on. We made things "romantic" and then before the big "O" inserted the swimmers. The nurse told us to get the catheter against the cervix and then pull it back a bit. Then, the big O.

We did two insems about 10 hours apart.

Obviously if you are going to try at home, you should be charting so that you can time things as well as possible. You have a very small window of opportunity and you have to guess right. Charting makes it an educated guess unless you are one of the few lucky women who can feel ovulation. That's why so many women choose monitored, medicated IUIs at an RE's office. They can do a trigger shot and have a much better idea of when you will ovulate because they trigger it.

    Good luck to you!
  • My partner and I did our first at home insemination on Saturday and are currently in our two week wait. I would love to hear more stories from you ladies that have had successful at home inseminations. They are so uplifting!!
  • Question to those who did do ICI successfully... SO did you insemenate on the day your temperature spiked with ovulation?? Did you do it that AM or wait until that evening. I know even 12 hrs can make all the difference...

    Thanks~

  • My temp spiked the morning after our insem when we were successful. So, we totally nailed the timing.

We're finding out (while trying for our second child) that we were really lucky. We've had a bit of trouble with timing lately.
  • Hi mommies and jgreer, I am on my TWW after doing at home insemination. We'll see what i did worked or not... only did 1 vial this time.
