At home or at the doctors.

Hi all! :) I was just wondering if the chances of getting pregnant go up for using the ICIif it is done with the doctor or at home? Also I am wondering if many women here have used the IUI, and how many times you had to try. I heard that using the IUI gives you a better chance of getting pregnant then using the ICI, is this true? Thanks and sorry if I am rembling, I have many questions and I am new to all of this. :)

  • Hi crazy -

Statistically speaking, an IUI performed by a physician definitely gives you a better chance of success.

By using ultrasound to pinpoint the best time to inseminate (rather than relying on an ovulation kit, etc.) and placing the sperm directly into the uterus, a physician is maximizing your opportunity. Because an ICI is potentially less accurate for timing and only takes the sperm as far as the cervix, it leave more to chance.

Depending on your age, health, the regularity of your cycle, etc., your odds of success can significantly vary. Statistically, an IUI is the "safer" bet, but plenty of women are successful with at-home insemination regardless of the odds. My advice is to consult with your physician and see what he/she recommends for your specific cicumstances.

Incidently, if you are considering at-home because it provides a more personal or intimate experience, most physicians will allow a partner/husband/wife/etc. to actually inject the sperm themselves once the catheter is in place. Then you can have the best of both worlds!

    Good luck,

  • Thanks Scott,

I am young and healthy and was just looking at all options. I am thinking that I will do the IUI as you have just answered all that I wanted to know. Thanks again.
