How Many Tries with IUI?

So next month, nov. will be my first time ttc w/donor sperm through iui. I believe my doc will want to monitor through ultrasound, so i wont have to chart, and I most likely will be getting meds to help induce Oing.

I Ovulate on my own, 26, and healthy so im hoping that this works..

How many tries does it usually take to succeed?

thanks ladies :)

  • I am also doing my first IUI next month. My doctor told me that the success rate was about 20%. I am using Femara as well as an ovidrel trigger shot.

The doctor did tell me that the research is all on people that have fertility issues, which I don't so not to get too caught up in numbers. All my bloodwork was great as well as my ultrasounds. I am married just to a girl so that is why we are using donor sperm.

My doctor told me that we would do rounds with oral meds then two rounds with injectables before moving to IVF.
  • Hi JRGodwin,
How many times did the doc said it usually takes, ive heard the doc will only want to do it 3-4 times..

Im going to meet with the doc this week and start the whole process..ive been through this whole work up thing before, when we thought it was me with the infertility probs not my hubby's. So im hoping everything does just as smoothly, that was about two years ago.

So the doc is putting you on femara and the ovidrel trigger shot and you ovulate on your own?

that's what im pretty sure the doc will be doing with me cause the nurse told me I will not have to worry at all about charting or anything..yay cause im sick of charting..
  • sorry JRGodwin,
lol i just read the part about doing iui 4 times before moving on..maybe i shouldnt read and reply so fast :)
  • My doctor feels like femara just tips the scales in my favor to to speak. Our doctor feels like the charting leaves too much room for error and the trigger shot gives them a solid time frame.

My doctor said after 6 IUIs, the chances of it working decrease. We are opting for four because of my insurance.
  • okay i see..we were thinking 6 iui's initially too so i'll see what the doc suggests.
  • Do you know when your IUI is going to be? Ours should be the week of Nov 8th.
  • Im seeing the doc tomorrow. Im telling him to start the process asap, im know he'll want to do an ultrasound tomorrow..

im crossing my fingers it will be also the beginning of nov.
  • Do you have a donor picked out yet? We FINALLY picked one out this week!!! Good luck at your appt tomorrow! It will be exciting to get started...right now I just feel like I am in a waiting pattern!
  • yes! it's hilarous actually..i spent two weeks narrowing down my top three..then went in for the doc visit and he told me to go with ici wash, so that they can wash it themselves, anyway I got home and my mom 'who always wants to hang out with me' and im trying to keep this a secret from had to come over. So i had ten mins. to start my search and purchase two ici vials. LOL. Man, i hope i didnt miss anything too major. :)

so i choose donor 05749, i figured a very small chance of getting pregnant on the first try anyways right...

Im starting progrestrone today and on that for the next ten days, then clomid days 5-9 then going in for an ultrasound the 4th of nov. and trigger shot hopefully the day or next then the first insemination!!! :) So maybe by thanksgiving i can finally be knocked up!
  • Sounds like we will be starting around the same time! I am doing femara instead of clomid. We picked donor 11747.

Did you doctor give you any stats or suggest how many times to try? Let's hope we both don't have to try more than once! :)
  • awesome!

My doc said 20% chance every month, and i believe were doing two inseminations every month. he had me order two vials, but i forgot to ask when were doing the second one.lol. also forgot to ask him how many times..he wants us to do iui..we only have enough for four months anyway..

he talks a lot and didnt let me talk hardly at all. grr
  • So you guys are doing back to back IUIs?

I wanted to do back to back IUIs, but my doctor gave me a ton of research to read on the topic and it did not show any increase in success. She said she would do it but she felt it was a waste of money. Plus my insurance will only cover one IUI a month so we would have to pay that out of pocket.

I have a lifetime max on my insurance so we are only doing 4 then going to do one round of IVF. My insurance will cover pretty much all of that. That is the one good thing about working for the state!
  • yea, im sort of confused why we need to vials for each cycle. Im going to call and ask why, even though i already purchased two vials. When i initially called and got a price for iui per month they told me 1 vial, after the consulation couple days ago, they told me, oh for sure you need two..like i was the crazy one. I remember research also showing that any more than one vial per cycle doesnt work, i'll mention that to the nurse..

it's all out of pocket for us, 1400.00-1700.00 a month, psychotic. Our 'great' insurance, first choice health, will cover alcholism, obesity etc etc but not fertility, not even the diagnosis of it. So were looking at only four months of doing this, if this doesnt work were done..
  • My insurance covers $15,000 and that is the lifetime max. The only reason we can make it last for 4 IUIs and 1 IVF is that the bloodwork, ultrasounds, etc are covered under the medical part of the plan and do not apply towards the $15,000.

I did just find out today that I need to use an ICI vial...which means we need to start the donor search over! I have to order it by Wednesday so I guess I will spend today doing that! :)
  • yea, are they going to spin it themselves too? I do like the fact that they can tell you the mobility/count etc.
  • Yeah...I like that too! I am information freak! The donor thing has been a bummer because we really liked the donor we picked out but he only has IUI vials! Guess I should have listened better in our meeting when they talked about the vial types!
  • yea for sure!

my doc put me on progrestrone for 10 days since i was late on my period, and it was 15mm thick..then count the 11day as my first cycle day.I thought progrestrone was for after the iui not before...then clomid days 5-9.
it's soo complicated im just hoping that the doc knows whats he's doing!
  • I am on IUI number 4! Although this time we went with injectable Gonal F and a shot of Ovidrel. This time I went with a new Dr and they looked at the sample before injecting and 85% were mobile already so my fingers are crossed.. I go for bloodwork on the 28th.. My Dr said that they would try 5-6 times before IVF. Good luck!
  • Hi,

I did my first IUI back in June 2010. I had alot of problems since I was diagnosed with PCOS, I had ovulation problems. They placed me first on Clomid for 3 months and nothing worked. Finally my doctor placed me on injectables Gonal F 900 IU and Ovidril. So my first IUI was done June and happy to say I got pregnant on my first try. Good Luck!
  • Laura -

I am not sure about the progesterone. Here is what I do each month:

CD 3 - Ultra Sound and Blood Work. The blood work is FSH, Estradiol and 2 other things I can't think of right now! :)
I take the meds from CD3 to CD8.
I go back in on CD 11 to see if there are mature follicles. From that point, they will tell me when to do the trigger shot and when to come back for the IUI.

Is that what you are doing? The doctor thinks my first IUI will be Nov 4th or 5th. Are you doing back to back IUI?
  • thats awesome karla..late congrats :)
  • Thank you ... sending you lots of baby dust and stay positive everything will be okay! Good luck on your IUI in November!!!!
  • I had IUI done twice, and am beginning to save up for my third. Hopefully I will be able to find a decent donor. :)
  • It's nice to feel like I'm not the only one who seems to be doing so many IUI's. I've had four failed attempts and will be trying again next month. I'm deciding whether to switch meds, donors, etc. It's hard to know what the problem is with the exception of my age. Good luck to everyone truing this month!
