RE advice vs Acupuncture

Hi there,
My RE recommended me doing acupuncture prior to IUI procedure but has asked that I not take any of the chinese herbs/tea. However, my acupuncturist (who specializes in fertility) is adamant about me taking herbs/tea that she has prescribed for me. Has anyone been in this situation?...or any guidance/wisdom on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

  • I am a firm believer in Acupuncture. I was seeing my acupuncturist before and during my pregnancy I am now 14 weeks pregnant. I also happened to have an appt the day of my insemination totally random. Mine does herbs but I told him no. You can tell them that you do not want to do that. It is still your body and you can put into what you want. I have GI issues as well and I always tell him I do not want to cause issues with that. Just tell them no. Even if they say it is okay you tell them you decided that you do not want to take anything. Good luck and keep us up to date.
  • I'm getting accupuncture too prior to my insemination and the day after. I'm still wondering if it will be effective. I've been recommended to take omega pills, red leaf clover tea or pills 3x a day, and take some progesterone supplements. I'm going to give it a try...so far it seems harmless. Hopefully for some success for a first-timer.
  • Acupuncture seems like the thing to do for IVF; however, from what I've read, unless you are starting the herbs 6 mos prior to starting IVF there's no point to taking the herbs anyway.
  • I did accupuncture, did not take any herbs, and now have an 8 month old son!
    :-)
    Good luck!
  • On second thought....maybe for the next cycle I will just do the acupuncture. But, I'm going to just do the natural progesterone supplements to hopefully maintain the pregnancy once I attain it. The acupuncture has defintely made my cycles a bit longer...I'm usually CD 21-23 days. The last cycle was 24 days.
  • KarenR, did you do acupuncture for weeks leading up to the IUI and after the IUI ? From what I understand it helps to do it on the day of the IUI (if possible) and through the first trimester to help ward against a miscarriage. thanks and congrats on your son ! :)
  • metsfan6413 I had acupuncture for a couple of sessions before I got pregnant. I am now 18 weeks pregnant and go every 2 weeks to stay in balance. It seems to help. I did happen to go on the day I was inseminated, and that was by a accident, as I make my appts about 2 - 4 weeks in advances.

My acupuncturist says he can also induce labor naturally when the time comes, I will have to do some research about that.

Juliet I have been going for acupuncutre for years and my cycle never changed when I was seeing him. Your cycle does change during your life. I was 21 days to the T prior to getting pregnant and then after the miscarriage it was some where 24 - 28 days. It was never consistent after my first miscarriage. I am now 18 weeks pregnant and still see him on a regular basis.

My acupuncturist trys to keep sprout calm to. Does it work not sure, we are using more magnets now than needles.

Good luck to all those and I really believe in acupuncturist.
  • Anissa - Thank you so much for your advice! I'm going to have to hold on IUI for a bit due to my insurance running out and transition to a new career. I'll see if I can try again.

In the mean time, I'm going to continue the acupuncture. My last cycle was very very light, the lightest I have ever had since puberty (LOL!) and 25 days. I guess I just happen to find a good acupuncturist (She also does cupping btw, I'm not sure if she does magnets). But, the last cycle I started clomid (since my follicles didn't mature enough) and it turns out I ovulated on CD8 instead of my usual CD10. Every cycle has been a let down, (ie. follicle size too small, estradiol was a bit high, not enough follicles).

At least, I found out why I couldn't get pregnant for so many years. Anyone else had this same problem? Anybody else had benefited from acupuncture in making their follicle size more mature? I'm sure it has, if your cycles became longer.
