Insurnce discrminatory bs

My wife's insurance is Empire. We are doing our 5th IUI on Monday and now the insurance is telling us that they are not going to cover the first six IUI because she needed to have 6 tries before going to the doctor. Im sure that straight couples are not questioned if they had sex for 6 months before going to the doctor. We had enough with the emotional stress of having 4 BFN to now deal with discriminatory BS from the insurance company. Did someone else had to deal with this?

  • We have Aetna and it's the same. The process for approval is discriminatory against same sex couples. A m/f couple only have to say they've been trying for 6 mos (if over 35). A same sex couple has to meet with a dr to prove they understand how to reproduce, then they must provide receipts for donor sperm, pregnancy tests, ovulation tests, and a BBT chart showing their cycle for the past six months with insemination dates. This proof is not required from m/f couples at all. I can understand they need something to show that same sex couples have tried to get pregnant, but receipts for donor sperm should suffice. Also, m/f couples should have to show the same level of proof for active trying i.e. receipts for pregnancy and ovulation tests and BBT charts showing dates of insemination. It's truly outrageous and I can't believe this is acceptable or that cases haven't been brought yet over it.
  • We have Aetna and it's completely bs. At first we thought we had lucked out with our insurance and our doctor - our doctor was very sympathetic and having dealings with Aetna before was willing to submit all the paperwork saying my wife had been trying on her own for 12 months before contacting them. Our doctors office called us before they submitted to check that we weren't legally married - oh wait we are - pay in full out of pocket please.

It sucks. If we were a heterosexual couple or my wife was "single" our insurance would cover 90% of everything.
