Sperm Count Question

We used donor 13604 eight times (ICI). Three were non-medicated trials and five were with Clomid and Ovidrel. We ordered 2 shipments of 4 vials each shipment over the period of 9 months. The last four vials had significantly lower sperm counts. The last one we did was 5 million. What is the guarantee on sperm count and motility? We can have the doctor's office verify all of the information. Just curious.

  • Hi T -

When vials are evaluated in a physician's office, there are a number of variables that can significantly affect the total motile sperm count. The amount of time the specimen is thawed, the individual doing the counting, and the type of counting chamber used are just some of these variables.

CCB has a strict quality control process in place and every specimen is evaluated prior to release. Feel free to read more about our specimen quality standards here:

Our ICI premium vials contain a minimum of 15 million motile sperm. (There is usually a decrease in the count after the lab washes the specimen.)

It's possible that your physician's office is getting a lower count due to the use of different equipment and/or a different thawing, washing, and counting method than what we use.

It's important to keep in mind that numerous studies find that for IUIs with donor sperm, anything greater than 5 million total motile sperm does not improve pregnancy outcome. Our vial standards are set generously above this mark.

Please feel free to download the Specimen Report form and have your physician's office submit it to us, so we can look into this further for you.
