Advice on fertility and IUI process

Hi all,
Me and my partner are very new to this, and I am seeking your advice. Finding it a little hard to talk to the rather hetero normative nurses at our clinic (that seems good otherwise). I have some really funny stories about stuff they've said ("Go home and have sex! You might get pregnant!")

We have not started the IUI process yet. Our plan has been that both my partner and I would do IUIs, using the same donor. My partner would start, and I would follow 6 months to a year later. The last few months we've done tests, and this has changed our plans. While my partner's tests are great, mine are no so great (I think). We decided that I would start trying with IUI right away. It is so hard to find information, and I'm trying to stay positive. If anyone would share their experience and/or information, I would be most thankful.

My tests are: FHS 11.4, AMH 0.63 and Estrogen 54. I am 37 years and 3 months old. The doctor has said that we should start natural cycle IUI, and not do any shots or hormone treatment (however, that was before she knew my AMH levels...) The ultrasound was done closely after my last ovulation, so she could only see the left ovary, which had 6 follicles. I am going in for an HSG test, since it looks like I have polyps in the uterus. If that is the case, the doctor needs to remove them (a little concerned about what this will do to the uterus, and how long after I can start with IUI...)

Can anyone tell me about the significance of these results? When did you start with hormone treatment? Still trying to figure out step by step how the IUI works, especially if hormone shots are involved, so thankful for info about that too. I just really want to educate myself. I know I should be happy that at least it looks positive for my partner, but I really do want to carry one of our children.

Thank you so much and good luck everyone!

  • Felicia, I don't have a whole lot of advice because I am not real familiar with all of the numbers but...
I HIGHLY recommend you join the facebook group CCB and CCB friends. Posting this kind of question there will prob get you many more responses as there are several women going through this and posting these kinds of numbers frequently. Just a suggestion. The group is so informative and supportive.
    Good luck

  • Hello Felicia

Definitely check out my videos I describe a little about IUI. I had an HSG test if there polyps they usually remove them the next cycle and you can start as early as next month sometimes.

My wife and I have been trying or a year but recently took 6 month off and now are back. I recommend buying alot of vials if you can. Our donor was retired so its a blessing that we didnt get prego because we would have to choose a new one for the next baby.

    Good luck

  • Hi there-
your FSH is elevated but not horrible. and your AMH indicates reduced ovarian reserve but this test is controversial and I know of several success stories with IUI's from women with similar results to yours. It can happen, absolutely. I am a little suprised a DR would advise an 'unmedicated' cycle.. with your age and elevated FSH, I would think an RE would suggest atleast a small dose of injections. Your Estrogen is high too (lower is better) but again, nothing about your blood work says you don't have a chance. Because I was 37 when I started this process, I automatically went to medicated IUI's. An HSG is always recommended in the beginning to make sure your tubes are clear and I am not sure about polyps, but I have a couple of small fibroids that neither by RE or gyn are too concerned about. Any surgery on the uterus will put you out of commission for atleast 8 weeks but again, I would really make sure this polyp removal is necessary. Good luck and SSBD.
