Does California Cryobank test for genetic issues like mitochondrial diseases on donors or does it only rely on the donor's family history when determining this?

There are many variables associated with genetic testing for mitochondrial disease and currently, there are no general population screening tests recommended for determining if a person or his or her offspring may be at risk to develop symptoms of mitochondrial disease. However, our genetic counselors evaluate the donors’ family medical histories in detail and our donors have regular physical examinations to evaluate signs and symptoms of any type of disease.
It is important to know that most mitochondrial diseases are inherited from a child’s mother. However, we do have a special testing program through which we may be able to perform additional testing on one of our donors for a particular client’s needs. Please see this information sheet for more details about this service: http://www.cryobank.com/uploadedFiles/Cryobankcom/_forms/pdf/documents/Special-Testing-Info-Sheet.pdf.
Based on your question, it sounds like you may have some experience in dealing with mitochondrial disease. I encourage you to contact our genetic counselors at 877-743-6384 to discuss your concerns in more detail and determine how they can assist you.
