if a donor is a carrier for spinal muscular atrophy, how do i find this out????? thank you.

    Hi Siobhan -

    SMA carrier testing is part of the donor screening process. Any applicant that is a carrier of SMA is disqualified.

    We were the first sperm bank to begin SMA testing on all applicants back in 2008. We also tested all active donors at that time and retired the few we found who were carriers. Keep in mind we may have a few old donors on our catalog who were not tested because they had retired from donating prior to us beginning SMA testing back in 2008.
