Starting 2nd IUI cycle . . . 1 or 2 inseminations per cycle? . . . any success stories out there?

So I am new to the bulletin boards. I just got my period and my BFN blood result today from my 1st IUI. I was on 50 mg Clomid and I did a shot of Ovidrel the day before my first insemination. I did 2 inseminations (one the day after the shot and one the next day) which was pretty pricey. Everything looked good (my follicles, progesterone level, sperm motility, etc). I'm 36 years old and am trying to conceive in the next 2 cycles. Otherwise I will wait a year until the funds and time opens up.
Anyone starting a cycle now or have any advice on whether it is necessary to have 1 or 2 inseminations in a cycle?
This is much more expensive than I thought but hopefully worth it all!
Thanks in advance!

  • Hi Dolphin. I'm sorry to hear about your first bfn. I have been at this for the past year and a half. I've actually had very good luck getting pregnant. Unfortunately for me my problem has been staying pregnant. I've had 3 miscarriages. I am getting ready to start my 4th IUI next week....I hope! I just wanted to let you know that I have had lots of success getting pregnant with only using 1 vial each try. I have used HcG trigger shot and my IUI 36 hours later. That could save you a good amount of money!

    Good luck!
  • Becky1141, have you ever had your testosterone and nk cell levels/immune system tested ?..I ask because i've been on other forums where women have had miscarriages and in alot of cases it was due to one of those and after being put on the proper meds (either a steroid called presidone or dexamethasone)or intrapilid (sp ?)they were able to maintain the pregnancy... it's just a thought and maybe worth checking out in your case.

I did 2 IUIs about 24 hours apart. I used no meds for my IUIs. I found myself pregnant on the second try. It is expensive to do 2 inseminations but totally worth it. My suggestion is to relax have a glass of wine after your insemination and keep yourself busy for the next 2 week.
  • Thank you Becky very much for the information. I ordered enough vials for 2 more cycles, 2 times each. Since I am limiting my time, I figured I might as well maximize my chances. But yes, it is very expensive. I wish they had statistics on how much the 2nd insemination improves the chances of a positive pregnancy. Good luck with your 4th IUI! I am praying that this one stays for you!!!

And thank you Anissa too. I hope that I have the same luck and that it will work on my second try as well which will be at the end of next week. I am going to try and relax more this time and I should be busier as I am working now (I am a teacher).

I've read some posts where women have had success doing IUIs with acupuncture. I may try that as well.
It is good to hear the success stories!

    Lucky baby dust to all!!!!
  • Metsfan, thanks for your input. I did ask them about the nk cells. I don't know about the testosterone but I know I've had so much bloodwork done I can't imagine they haven't at some point. My first miscarriage was before treatment and since then have found my follicles aren't maturing on their own. I am now on injections. My second was a chemical pregnancy and the third they did testing on the baby and the baby had Trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome). So at this point they don't think it is the nk cells. They are obsessive compulsive when it comes to testing so I'm pretty sure they would have me tested if they think that's an issue. But I will ask again if I need to. I really appreciate everyone's support and any info they can share. I've learned a lot on here!

Dolphin, it sounds like we might be on our 2ww together. I go for my Day 9 u/s on Wednesday to check my follicles. I am hoping for good news! I am also a teacher and getting ready to get back to school soon! I was happy to get this cycle in before school starts so I don't need to take time off the first couple weeks of school.

Thanks again to everyone with their support! Good luck to all...
  • Hi Becky,
How funny that we are both teachers!
I have actually started school already but it is just meetings this week.
    Classes start next week.
My ultrasound will probably be next Wednesday so I may be a week behind you. If that's the case, a colleague may have to cover one of my classes.
Same thing with my inseminations. I am hoping that at least one falls on the weekend so that I don't need coverage.
It's tricky because I don't want the administration to know until I am pregnant.
Anyway, I am glad that we are in this together and going at about the same time.
Keep me posted on how it goes for you and I will do the same!
Lucky baby dust to us all!!!!
