How many donor applicants per year?

Admin,

I often see the statistic that CCB accepts only the top 1% of all applicants, which was a big sell point for us. We found it reassuring that CCB was interviewing these men in person multiple times and has the ability to be highly discriminate about who to accept as a donor. I've seen the word "thousands" used in other bulletin threads to describe the number of annual donor applicants, and we read this statement in an online article from 2012..

"Being admitted to California Cryobank as a sperm donor is a bit like getting into Harvard. The bank accepts fewer than 1 percent of its 26,000 annual applicants. (Harvard, in comparison, accepts about 6 percent of its approximately 35,000 undergraduate applicants.)"

Just wanted to do some fact checking to see if that is an accurate statement, 1% of approximately 26,000 applicants/year??

    Hi T -

CCB continues to be highly selective in our donor recruiting, with less than 1% of our online applicants actually becoming donors. In fact, To help maintain our 550+ catalog, we recently opened a new office in Houston and have plans to continue expanding in the years to come. You might be interested to learn that the highest disqualifier for those meeting the basic requirements (four-year college, at least 5’9”, good general health) is specimen quality; many of our disqualified applicants are perfectly capable of having children, but their sperm volume (amount), motility (percentage of good swimmers), or morphology (shape) does not meet our standards.

Other disqualifying factors in descending order include: family medical history, positive STD test, and being a carrier for common genetic disorders such as cystic fibrosis or spinal muscular atrophy.
