Minority Sperm

Hi

I am interested in using African American or Latino sperm (possibly also multi-ethnic). If anyone has experience with this, how has the counts been? I read on another website someone say that "some women have experienced poor counts from CCB because they are using minority donors, who are probably less plentiful, causing the bank to not have the ability to be as selective in the donors they hire"….has this been true for some women?

I am a light skin Black woman with Hazel eyes and i would like my future baby to look as much like me as possible especially since i am doing this as a single mother by choice.

  • I too am doing trying this for the first time. While thinking about IUI I searched a lot of profiles on different websites. At my first visit with the infertility specialist he gave me a flyer California Cryobank and recommended them. The second profile I read from their site connected with me! I browsed others and just kept going back to the second one. I did not choose a minority donor but my doctor said the sperm count and motility was excellent! In viewing some of the post if u get not optimal sperm count/motility looks like u can be reimbursed. However with only excellent sperm & counts being saved sounds like thawing processes is critical and if done wrong can hinder sperm! Funny I read so many post about changing donors but I would rather go on strike 3 and change doctors. Fertility specialist very greatly from there experience and regimens! Good luck to u! This is credit worthy donor bank, watch their videos! Tons of exceptional excellent service!
  • I too would prefer a minority donor but once I subscribe if I don't find one, I am okay with a different ethnicity. CCB was the recommendation of my dr, also. (Even over their bank). 2014 baby have you had you IUI? Selected your donor?

I narrowed down to 28 donors, once I receive some test results saying this is going to be possible, I will subscribe to see full profiles and pics to narrow down to 2-3
  • I beg to differ. I have chosen 3 minority donors and all of their sorry counts sucked. I have gotten refunds for 2 and in the process of getting the 3rd one. Obviously, since I'm getting the refunds, the bank doesn't find fault with my lab, which is actually a research and teaching lab, connected to a research and teaching hospital.

I believe they are splitting the donations so much. I should t have picked 3 different donors, which all happen to be minority, and have all of their counts suck. So I am changing banks.
  • @lovelymo79 good luck. Can you share what donors you tried? I didn't even think about the need to get a certain number of vials from a limited population.

A refund is great but the expense of the procedures is a different story, so maybe if my dr says IVF is my best option then I won't worry as much.
  • Lovely what procedure did you have and was it medicated?
  • Dear KBT when picking a donor I really focused on what he had to say to his future offspring. I did not pay for the subscription! After I made my decision I bought only the 3 child hood and pictures that If my child as he grows longs for information I wanted a profile that reflected my beliefs and personality. My 4 things I wanted was christian, open donor, cmv neg and O positive blood. I had my mind made up mainly through the written part of his self essay. I had my iui on feb 16 so am awaiting the results . However I am a healthy 37 year old, naturally conceived twice. Miscarriage at 8 weeks which is common with first pregnancies but the pain of death stung! Then 2 years later ovulated a week late and got pregnant with my healthy 4 1/2 year old. I have always wanted to be a mommy and have desired more than one child. Never have walked down the isle and gotten married, feel that now is the time to continue with my family to believe still in time God will align me up with a man to marry! In the meantime why I am waiting and before my eggs age more figure I would try iui. However with ivf at least u know fertilization took place! If I had complex fertility issues and my insurance covered I would lean on that route.

  • @2014 thoughts are with you, I am deciding before my eggs age more (age 39), but I also have some issues that we arriving to fully diagnose and I was recently diagnosed with lupus(thankfully it's just a clinical not symptomatic so no med) so hopefully my insurance will cover awaiting a decision because I am praying to conceive before I ever need to take meds. I am with you on God sending the man, I didn't want to push or rush a relationship because of a child. I want to be certain he is the one.

I do wish the essays were in their handwriting because I think it tells another aspect of a person.

    Keep us posted.
  • Hi All -

Please note that ALL CCB donors must meet or exceed our specimen quality standards.

Donors must be in the top 15-20% of the general population in sperm quality to qualify for our donor program. Even after they qualify, every single semen sample collected by our lab is analyzed to make sure it meets or exceeds our high quality standards.

Lovelymo79 - Please feel free to contact Client Relations Manager, Melonee Evans x1240, regarding your situation. Substandard vials are very rare and multiple substandard vials from different donations usually indicate a difference in lab equipment or thawing/counting procedures.

Best of luck to those TTC and please don't hesitate to contact CCB with any questions you may have as you go through the process!

    Regards,

    Nicole

  • Dear KBT, it would be neat to see the donors hand writing. Sad news iui didn't work. I feel disappointed in the doctor because I feel like was just another $ to the office. I had my iui on the 16th of feb a Sunday. But started my period 13 days later on march 1st 13 days later. Took a pregnancy test just in case I was lucky since some people still have there periods when they r pregnant but it is negative today. So, will consider doing intra cervical insemination myself at home without the doctors expenses in a few months. Good luck to u!
  • :( sorry to hear that. That's the part I am not looking forward to. My insurance will pay for 3 iui and 1 IVF. I am thinking I might do 1 iui, if no luck 1 IVF with my dr then switch drs if no luck. My sister started at my office with a different dr then changed with success. My dr was highly recommend, so I am staying hopeful.

Do they give you any info, or do they basically say better luck next time?
  • I didn't notify them..... Guess waiting to see if they will call me. Guess i was in denial thinking that this wouldn't take multiple attempts since my cycle is so predictable. I really didn't want to do the trigger shot because my cycle is so predictable. So I don't know if that made me ovulate a day early. I will try again though. I even bought maternity clothes and a car seat last week at huge indoor community garage sale! I really think I will try it on my own if the sperm is aloud to be shipped to my house. But will shoot for May because feb would be a good month to have a baby for me. Keep me posted about when u r going to try. Happy baby thoughts to u! Awesome your insurance covers so much! So your sister did iui? Did she use donor sperm?
  • I will probably start in May. She did not, her husbands with two IVF cycles
  • What # did you use, will you change #s?
