Retired Donor 12847

I currently have a little girl by this donor and we have 2 vials left. There are no samples available. Is there ever a situation where a donor could be contacted and asked to provide additional vials? How would I know if there are other recipients of this donor with additional vials for sale? I want to wait another year to try again so I have time, but I'd like to be proactive.

Thank you,
Amanda

  • Hi Amanda -

    Congrats on your little girl!

To use the same donor for two children, we offer our Family Tomorrow program that provides free storage with the purchase of at least 10 vials. This is to secure vials of your donor for future inseminations. Our donors can sell out quickly and once vials are sold out, there's not much we can do.

First, I would suggest calling Client Services and ask to be added to the notification list for your donor, so that we may contact you if we receive any buyback vials for your donor.

You can also inquire about Donor Reactivation. This is a time consuming and costly process. Unfortunately, we can't simply collect additional vials from the donor after he completed our program. If the donor agrees to provide additional vials (only for parents looking to have siblings), he still has to go through the whole screening process as if he is a brand new applicant. Even if the donor is willing, if he moved out of the area or has a job that is not flexible, he might not be able to make the time commitment necessary to go through the screening process again. There's also a chance that he may get disqualified during the screening process. In addition to paying for the vials, you will also need to pay a reactivation fee for the cost of the tests and screening process. There may also be additional expenses for the donor (travel, lodging, etc). If all goes well, it typically takes about a year from when the reactivation process starts to when vials become available.

You may also post messages here, on our Sibling Registry, or Facebook to see if anyone has additional vials in storage they are willing to part with. We offer a non-family vial transfer to transfer the vials from their storage account to yours. Client Services can tell you more about the details and cost of this option.

    Regards,
