Home ICI Questions

Hi. We are thinking about attempting home ICI inseminations as our final effort to conceive #2. I have questions I cannot find the answers to. Perhaps someone can help?

*How much live sperm survives a thaw on average in an ICI vial?

*How long does ICI frozen sperm live after the thaw?

*Given that an ICI insemination requires longer for the sperm to meet the egg, what is the ideal timing for this process? All I can find is when to do an IUI (with both OPK and medication), which doesn't help.

Thanks.

  • Hi Karyne -

These are all important questions to discuss with a physician. While an at-home insemination is certainly possible, your chances of success are significantly lower than an IUI with a doctor.

The extended time, sperm/drug costs, and emotional stress of inseminating at-home can be significant. Please consider all your options before moving forward.

    Good luck,

  • Thank you, Scott. We've been there, done that with both natural IUI (6 years ago for our son), medication-regulated IUI, and 2 IVFs. We are working with our physician on this. That said, you should hopefully be able to tell us what your minimum guarrantees are for live, motile sperm after the thaw and some of the other frozen-sperm specific questions, right? Thanks.
  • Hi Karyne -

Absolutely. This page should answer those questions.

Be sure to be looking for ICI vials for your at-home insemination.

    Best of luck,
