selective reduction

I went in for u/s and bloodwork this morning (cycle day 12) and have 5-7 good follicles. This is my 6th IUI cycle and first time to use clomid + injectables (menopur and bravelle). I'm in a bit of a panic over whether to cancel the cycle. I'm going back in the morning to see where things stand. I'm 37, so my doctor feels like even if multiple eggs fertilize, some won't make it, especially since I've had 5 unsuccessful IUI's already.

I'm theoretically open to the possibility of selective reduction, but I find it emotionally upsetting and am concerned about the risks to the other fetuses and risk of preterm labor.

Does anyone have experience with selective reduction or just general advice?

  • I don't have any personal experience, but I have a close relative who did that. She said the experience was unpleasant, but it is what was best for her and her child. No one is going into this to be an octomom.

I know people have LOTS of opinions on this subject, but you have to go with what is best for you and any child you raise. Is it fair to try to handle 3+ babies? Fair to you - or to the babies? I've always said that if I had more than 2 in there, I would reduce. In my situation, it would be a terrible disservice to any child to try and handle more than that.
  • abbyjenna, i totally agree. by day 13 i was up to 9 follicles, and it was clear i needed to cancel the cycle. i really want a single birth or twins- anything else is to much for me personally.

i realized that in addition to hyperstimulating my ovaries, all the meds i've been on are taking a toll on my sanity and general well-being. my wife and i have decided to take a longer term approach and go back to natural cycles. i don't think there's actually anything wrong with my fertility- we just got caught up in the fertility clinic culture of increasing interventions every month we didn't get pregnant. i bought Taking Charge of Your Fertility today, and am excited to embark on a more natural and holistic approach, even if it means we're going to have to keep at it a while longer.

thanks for your input and best wishes!
