pre-insemination check up?

I am gay and so have never been in a situation where I could get pregnant. Should I go for tests to check I can get pregnant before purchasing? If yes, what should the tests be? Thank you

  • Hi L -

    Congrats on starting this process!

It's a good idea to get tests done, especially if you are over 34 years old.

Tests can vary depending on your physician and your medical history, but some of the more common tests are: a pelvic ultrasound to check your ovaries, an AMH test to check your ovarian reserve, a Day 3 FSH and/or other blood tests to test hormone levels, and an HSG to determine the health of the uterus and fallopian tubes. These tests can help determine the best insemination plan for your body.

You can check with your OBGYN to see if he/she offers these tests and you can also check if your insurance might cover any of it. I would also research fertility clinics in your area. Some clinics do routine info sessions and sometimes they may offer a complimentary or discounted workup or initial consultation. I also recommend finding a physician that you feel comfortable working with. Sometimes the journey to parenthood can be overwhelming and it helps when you feel that you can be open with and supported by your medical professional.

Since the insemination process is time sensitive and pricey, I recommend doing your homework and not cutting corners in the beginning, so that you can make the most out of each cycle attempt and maximize your chance of becoming pregnant.

    Best of luck!

    Regards,

    Nicole
