Doc won't do IUI because I'm overweight

Hi all,

This is my first time posting. I am wondering if any other overweight lesbian moms-to-be have had a doctor tell them he/she wouldn't do IUI because they were overweight? I am 5'5" approx. 250 pounds. I understand if he didn't want to treat me if my weight was affecting my fertility, but I don't even know if it is yet because I haven't TTC. All of my bloodwork is good/normal, I eat fairly healthy and exercise 5 days/week, 2x a week with a personal trainer. I feel like if I were an obese straight woman with a male partner, a doctor couldn't stop me from getting pregnant. Something about this doesn't feel right to me. Any advice? Thoughts? Thanks so much!

  • My Dr. did an IUI when I was 240 pounds and I'm 5'6" It sounds like your Dr. making excuses. Probably time to find a new Dr.
  • hi! i'm sorry to hear that. I'm overweight as well and have a wonderful ob and high risk specialist that have made absolutely no big deal about my weight at all. we've discussed the risks and i am scheduled for my first iui at the end of this month. it sounds like you might want to find another practitioner.
  • I think you should look into a new doctor. Our RE refered us to a high risk ob who switched all of her medications over to safe ones and gave her a low carb low calorie diet and exercises but never said that her weight would stop them from performing the IUI. She was 5' 4" 245 when we first met with her but at the time she conceived she was down to 214. (2 months later)
  • I would find a new doctor. I was 207 and 5'8" when I got pregnant. I never got lectured from my fertility doctor or OB. You have to do what is best for you and no doctor can tell you how to live your life. If you are trying to get pregnant, I wouldn't start a strenuous exercise routine. It may mess with your periods. Find a non-judgmental doctor.
