My story! UPDATE

So I am doing an update with some questions. I am addicted to getting all the education I can get before I plunge into my first IUI. Let me first say that I have bought the book Taking Charge of your Fertility! This has been a God sent book!;o) I thought I knew everything about my body as a female but this book is amazing. Must buy. I went to my Gyn and had a progesterone blood test done. I am 30 yrs old never been pregnant or anything. My progesterone is at an average level which my dr. gave me an all clear on that part. I plan on doing a CMV test as well. Okay so here are my questions: My dr(gyn) welcomed doing an IUI once a month. Since I have no problems with fertility my insurance will not cover it. My dr's office charges 60.00 per insemination. Is that reasonable? And should I have a problem with him signing off on one insemination IUI in his office a month? HELPPPP Let me know!

  • WOW is right! Our RE charges $350. $60 is an awesome price! I would make sure there aren't additional charges though because that is really cheap.
  • Yes I know right! The price is for him to do it in his office. He told me that he only does one a month though. He has done it a couple of times with success for those patients. Keeping my fingers crossed I have been doing my folic acid and prenatal over the counter vitamins too!
  • mzkac that is very inexpensive our fertility clinic is charging $400 for the procedure.
I would like to let you know that when we began this journey we sat down with our GYN and he warned us of this situation, he actually told us not to have a GYN perform the procedure that says they can as it is a very delicate process and can lead to infection or other problems. We then went to our chosen fertility clinic and was told the same by our doctor there. We were told that they have seen patients who have had their GYN perform the procedure with multiple problems.

I am jut trying to inform you of the information we received please do not take this reply as discouraging just a word of caution from the information we received.

    Good Luck on your journey!

  • A friend of mine told me the same... She only paid $60!! Our doctor (SO. CAL INLAND EMPIRE) charges $135 for the procedure and Approx. $60 for the wash if its needed. Lucky Girl.
  • We had some IUIs done by our family doc (lesbian mom!). The procedure itself isn't difficult, our challenge was that she didn't have access to ultrasounds and other technology that a fertility clinic has available. We chose the timing, with no input from her. After a few unsuccessful rounds, we transferred to a fertility clinic. After 7 total cycles of IUIs, we finally got our son. We used clomid on our last cycle.

We're getting ready to try for #2 now, and have 7 vials on ice...I hope it doesn't take 7 cycles this time! That would be expensive and anxiety-provoking!

    Good luck mzkac!
  • Alleyduck I'm in the inland empire too where is your fertility doctor I'm trying to find one???
  • Hey rlarr12987,
We've actually been using our regular OB/GYN. He's at Beaver Medical Group in Redlands. Good Luck.
  • I wish I only had to pay $60!!! We pay $715 at the beginning of each cycle, and that doesn't include the $350 that insurance covers. WOW, that's a great price!
  • So we went yesterday for our first IUI and guess what?! Our insurance covered 50% of the procedure!!! I had checked before and was told our ins. covered nothing listed as fertility, but when our doctor called yesterday she said 50% was covered!!! We only payed $70!!! YAY!
