CMV

Is CMV something I should worry about? I just realized the new donor we selected has Positive next to CMV.

  • You need to get tested. Our RE did all that bloodwork right before we were ready to start our first IUI. If you are CMV positive you can have either a positive or negative CMV donor. If you are negative, you MUST have a CMV negative donor.

That's what we were told anyways
  • Thank you,

I'm having my partner call the Dr. today, I know they did blood work in the beginning because we found out I need the MMR booster because I was low in rubella.

We are getting ready to do our 2nd IUI in August and our RE told us our original donor has low modility so we were ordering our 2nd when I noticed it said CMV positive.
  • Hi, I was also concerned about CMV status. After much research and reassurance from my dr, I came to the decision that CMV +/- is nothing for me to worry about. I do not know if I am + or - and as I understand it, CMV is only dangerous if you are initially infected while pregnant.

A + CMV status means that a donor carries the anti bodies for CMV and was exposed at sometime in their life. A person cannot catch CMV through antibodies, there has to be a present and primary infection to be contagious. So inseminating with a donor who is CMV+ does not expose you to the virus. All donors samples are screened for CMV and samples with primary infections are discarded.

I felt as if the risk for infection was almost non-existent. Each person has to do what is best for them but as I understand it, there has never been a case of a pregnant woman getting an infection from a CCB donor. Hope that helps.....
  • That's what we heard and read as well, our RE recommended if negative get a CMV negative. If positive it doesn't matter.

Our thoughts were, why risk it?
  • Our RE also recommended we look for a CMV- donor but said if we fell in love with a + one she wouldn't object because 50-80% of the population in the United States is now +! (40% worldwide) That is cutting out a ton of great donors.
  • My RE advised the same. He said that it really doesn't matter. However, from what I've read, there is a very slight risk of birth defects from CMV+ donors and if you contract it while pregnant it can cause severe complications for both mother and baby. I am negative and only searched negative donors. I figured, if I am choosing a donor, I want to choose one with the least amount of risk. Most women do not have the luxury of forsight when selecting a partner!
