Anyone in the western MA area going through the IUI process?

Hola, I'm just looking to connect with some people in my area that may be going through this process also. I am still in the beginning stages of all this and it's nerve-wrecking. I think picking the donor was tough, so many choices. We finally had picked a few donors and due to irregular menses and bad timing, I guess I waited too long to purchase sperm, and they ran out:(.. so, there we were again, trying to narrow the top choices, but i've think we're done. How far in advance do people purchase sperm? and how many vials per insemination? Do i buy extra and store it? ugh, so many questions and not many of my "straight" friends can help....any advice will be greatly appreciated! Thanks

  • I think picking the donor is a very tough process too! I bought 3 vials and will use 1 vial per IUI. My RE told me that it takes about 3 or 4 trys to be sucessful. I made my purchase about 3 weeks before my first try and had it shipped right away. My RE will store short term for free but charge annually for long term storage much cheaper than CCB when I get prego.
  • Hey Margarita, I am in Boston and I can be your single friend and help with advice or support :-) I am i my 2ww after my 5th IUI and it's been quite the road.

As far as purchasing the donor vials.....well, it takes a few weeks of searching and for me, I looked at everything about the donor but essentially wanted an open donor which narrowed it down and then medical history ( both donor and family) were important. I also purchased the whole package on the donor I chose and honestly, I felt like I picked the PERFECT donor for me. When I initially purchased the vials, he had "over 25" available and so I bought 4. Two days later, he had 17 available and so I bought 6 more and then 2 more the next day because someone else was buying them. Now he is sold out and retired and I have only 4 vials left and still not pregnant.

So, with that said, if you find a good donor, buy a bunch. You get 3 years of free storage if you buy 12 vials and you can always sell them back to CCB for 50% or find someone else to buy them. Also, if you want siblings, you will have same biological father.

Before I started this, I asked a friend here on Boston how many she bought and she said that she and her partner bought 18 vials. I thought she was crazy but prob only because she got pregnant 1st try!

Anyway, feel free to email me. I am not in western MA but I am in Boston. Jennifer7170@msn.com

  • Hi,

We are a lesbian couple in western MA. We've just selected our donor and are about to try IUI for the first time next week. So exciting! Anyways, happy to chat with someone from the area. Lord knows we'd love local support too!
