Success at 43!!

For all you 'older' ladies in these fertility stakes don't give up hope. On my 2nd IVF attempt I am now pregnant and it may be twins.

The first attempt I stressed over dates/drugs etc. On the 2nd attempt I faced reality that my chances were so slim it wasn't likely but didn't want any regrets in life that I didn't try.

It is exciting and scary at the same time given the higher risks.

So many of the posts here of 40 plus year olds suggest donor eggs... worth trying yourself first.

  • If you don't mind me asking what went wrong with your 1st IVF try?
  • Yay! I love hearing stories like this. If you don't mind me asking, what was your FSH? Mine is 20 and I'm worried.

    Congratulations to you!
  • The 1st try just didn't take (not sure the transfer went well as the medical staff seemed to wonder if they had done the job). The reading after 10 days 1st try was around 5 and then dropped to nothing a few days later.

Not sure what FSH is? Is that the same as HCG? It was 22 after day 10 and 322 on day 14.

They also test for progesterone which I take daily but I don't worry about that level as it seems to be OK.
  • The Betabase dot info website has info on median scores which gives me something to compare with.

20 would be fine if you are early on pinkcloud.
  • Congratulations, I am 47 and trying my first IVF so very excited and happy to hear others near my age having success. My doctor wants me to try my own eggs and if not use donor eggs. I am very optimistic.
  • Wonderful news!! Congrats to you!!
  • Hi,

That is such happy news, congrats!! Would you mind saying what donor # was? I will be 40 in a few months and really want this IVF cycle that I am on now to work. I am a single mom and this is my only shot at making it work, so want a donor that I know has worked with us mature mammas. :-)

Thanks and I am really happy for you!
  • It did not work - my age of my eggs caused all to fertilize abnormally. I used 12338 which was fine and had great numbers. I am very upset and doctor wants me to move to donor egg. Good luck to you. I will not give up on my dream :)
  • smilingmary as you say don't give up - if it is not one way it will be another.

happyday I used donor 11899 - he hasn't had any vials available for a long time now, but was young in his 20s when he donated. Hanging out for my first scan to see if it is twins!!
  • On my first attempt I used a different donor who was older - don't know if that made any difference but if I had my time again, and had to start this over again I would be going for a young donor.

YueYue -- I would be so grateful if I may very briefly contact you offline with a quick (& time-sensitive question)..? I'd SOO appreciate a brief response, as I'm doing something similar now. Thank you.

...Best wishes to you & Congrats on your conception!

I can be directly reached at: . Or I can contact you, if you prefer. Thank you, again.
  • yueyue - Do you have a child from 11899? Would love to be in contact. I'm on the sibling registry as well and you can send me an email through that or respond here. Don't know if you'll even check this site, but maybe in the future you'll swing by. Thanks.
  • yueyue and Wendy- I was wondering if either of you may have extra vials from donor 11899 that you are no longer planning to use? My spouse and I would love to have another child using this donor, but he is now retired and no longer in the program. I can be reached by email at mmpierson912@gmail.com. Thank you so much!
  • Hi ladies 40+, what was your AMH when your doctor allowed you to do IVF with your own eggs? Mine is recommending donor eggs and I just want to try again with my own.
  • Smilingmary.... I know many woman your age who used their own eggs. One of my closest mom friends is 48. Good luck.
  • Hi 40+ers

I'm 41, 1st IUI tomorrow. My FSH was 15, my E2 was 80. Less than ideal and my dr said I should wait to retest my bloods next month but I wanted to go now!

I took clomid 50mg days 3-7 and today on ultrasound it showed I produced 2 perfect sized follicles on 1 side (20 & 20.3) and a smaller one on the other (13.5) which is still pretty good. They triggered me today and I'm hoping the stars align tomorrow when they do the insemination. I'm using 12699.

Anyone with similar experience and good results?
  • Hi, I'm 42 and will be trying again.. I had my son at 39. I had 1 Failed IVF and several IUI. My doctor kept saying it was my eggs never showed me any solid numbers to prove it. My husband and I decided to go with a donor and Success after 2nd IUI. I switched docs. Get your numbers ladies.. do your research.. Some of these fertility centers are mills and get you in and out. After I changed doctors I was looking online and saw a lot of similar stories about the place I went.
Have faith and don't give up! Good Luck!
