Trying to get pregnant at home

I tried for over 2 years to get pregnant via IUI and with hormone therapy - damn endometriosis. I have stopped trying, but my parter is starting and we want to try at home. Have any of you tried at home? Tips, opinions, positive/negative experiences - all comments welcome!

  • My wife and I tried a home for 3 cycles, doing 2 inseminations per cycle. After that we began going for IUI and are still unsuccessful (so needless to say, at home could work but not for us).

We tracked ovulation with a pee test so knew when to inseminate.

    Positives:
-We could inseminate anytime of day we wanted to. Not just in the morning like when we go in for IUI.
-We could have sex first and then inseminate, make it feel like we were really creating a baby together.
-It was private and just between us.

    Negatives:
-Timing of ordering the sperm from the bank (it only lasts so long in the dry ice it comes in so you really have to know how to time it). We order quick shipping for more money so that it could sit at home for 3-4 days until I ovulated. And you have to be home to receive it!
-You'll have to CAREFULLY heat it up yourself. Temp shouldn't get to hot or you'll cook those swimmers. You also have no idea if you did it correctly or what the mobility count is which you get with the Dr.
-You'll need something to inseminate with - an online search should help you find a good catheter to buy.
-The sperm is going into the cervix so it has longer to swim.

I hope that this helps a bit. I'm willing to share more if you want. Good luck to you!

  • We were successful after 2 tries of home ICIs. my wife always tracked her cycle just to keep record her periods but we started to track ovulation with opks for 2 months along with follicle scans by me at work (although the scanning didnt work to let us know when she did ovulate as my schedule was always awry- we were able to track follicle number and growth). We relied on OPKs and inseminated 12 hrs and 24 hours after a positive OPK using a Diva cup. We thawed the specimen in room tempature water for 10 minutes and I held it in my hand for 5. Then put it in the Diva cup and the she put it in for 12 hrs (although it probably didn't need so long). Afterwards- she climaxed. We got a positive on 11 DPO. Hope it sticks - I had a loss last year so we are cautiously optimistic.
