iui's and % of concieving

just wondering why iui's have such low success rate, yet most docs only recommend 3-4 iui's before moving on. I mean if it's the same % or lower of a normal couple concieving every month shouldnt it be around 6-12 months or so of doing iui?

u would think the % of getting preggo through iui would be higher. everywhere i look it says 7-20%.

  • I don't know about the percentages. I am sorta putting my blinders on and hoping for the best. I have found in the last 5 years of TTC that the more I know, the more I worry. So I am hoping that being blissfully ignorant will help me to relax. :o)
  • I think it is because most "normal couples" don't have the cost of buying the sperm and paying to have the IUI done. Our RE recommended 3-4 tries before moving on to Medicated cycles and then 3-4 cycles there and then IVF. Luckily ours worked before having to get into all that but that is standard for her. Again this is just what I think not necessarily the reasoning. Our RE also said we can do as many unmedicated cycles as we wanted but she really recommended only 3-4.

your %s are right- from the info i got too. my dr told me 15-20%. i was surprised. actually i don't know what i thought it would be- had no frame of reference but thought it would be higher too. when i asked why (thinking it was my age) i was told it is the same % for married couples too. that made me feel better but then again like you said, they have an unlimited supply and access whenever needed so that in itself ups their chances. my dr is telling me after 6 tries!!!!! we will look into more testing- b/c i don't have any fertility problems- that i know of- never tried to get pregnant before.
  • yea my doc also would do however many iui's that i wanted..

i wonder why though it's only 3-4 times.they say your chances decrease after that, but other research ive looked at mentions that each cycle is independant of one another so it doesnt lower. how confusing, lol.
im thinking that the low % is based on women with issues or have male issues.

they only thing i see being against us is the fact that the sperm is post thaw which dont live as long..but besides that a healthy female w/no problems using donor sperm should have a lot higher % rate a month than just 20%. i mean they put it into your uterus...

i wish i could be like Khindra...but im the type of person who wants to learn about anything i dont know..it's dangerous LOL.
