Eggs disappeared before they were mature

I am feeling really discouraged. I am a 39 year old woman who would love nothing more than to have a baby. In the beginning I started out and there were no eggs. The nurse was not very hopeful, she sat me down and gave me a heart to heart talk. I had just started taking fertility drugs and on the next visit I had 3 eggs. Two were 9mm and one was 10mm. The nurse seemed really surprised and it really gave me hope. On the next visit after that they had grown to 13mm and 14mm. I went back again today all excited thinking that I might be ready for insemination this weekend. The nurse starts the ultra sound and the eggs were gone! All three completely disappeared. They drew some blood and told me that they wanted to check with the doctor and see if I had already ovulated. I get a call later in the day and the nurse told me that she had bad news. I could tell by the tone in her voice that my day was about to be turned upside down. She said that I ovulated and I need to schedule an appointment with the doctor to talk about things. I responded with, Are we going to try again? She said that the best thing at this point is to just talk to the doctor. I feel completely crushed..like the rug has been pulled out under me. Has anyone else experienced eggs growing rapidly only to have them disappear before they are mature? This was my very first try at this but I feel like the doctor is going to try to discourage me from proceeding when I meet with her. I know I am no spring chicken but my window of opportunity is not completely shut yet. Please tell me what your experience was and how you were able to conceive at an older age.
