1st RE Appt (What to expect?)

Hello All,

My wife & I have our 1st appointment with an RE on Thursday! We have tried a few times at home but with no success and due to my advanced age (38) we knew it was time to get some medical intervention. My question is, what can we expect to happen at our 1st appt? And also, how long does it typically take once you have the 1st appt to when we can actually begin trying?

Needless to say we are SO excited and nervous and just want to get started ASAP!

Thanks in advance for your feedback! :)

  • Hello baby dreams!

What to expect in your first appointment is a lot of tests. We met with our doctor and then on our next cycle began the testing cycle which included lots of bloodwork and ultrasound to make sure everything is in working order. We did a saline ultrasound as well to make sure all was okay. You will be given the choice to do all the genetic testing and whatnot. I am not sure if there will be extra tests because of your age. What I am finding from these boards is every RE is different. Our clinic is very thorough but the nurses do everything. Other clinics the doctor does everything. It all depends on your clinic. After your testing cycle if nothing shows up you should be good to go on your next cycle. Then the fun begins. :) It's an emotionally tolling process and you will be at your clinic often. Depending on your intervention you will be there often for bloodwork ultrasounds and IUIs. But in the first appointment its developing a plan and starting the testing cycle. Things moved so quickly with us because we met our doc and then the next day we started our testing cycle because we were on the right day of my wife's period. Good luck, let us know how it goes. These boards are a life saver. Can't wait to see you get a BFP!
  • Thanks Elliejo! The appointment went pretty good. We went over our different options and he ordered all the CD3 blood work (which I will be doing on Thursday), took blood for the AMH test, they did an ultrasound, and he ordered an HSG. I will be doing that early next week. We will meet back with the Dr. on Feb 26th to go over all results and if all is well we will have our 1st medicated IUI in March! We should get the results of the AMH test tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed that all is well due to my advanced age (38)!

    Baby dust! :)
  • So exciting!! They move so fast at the clinics. And their whole goal is to get you pregnant as soon as possible. Their outcomes look good when you get pregnant soon. Good luck and I hope all your test results are good. I am glad they are going medicated right away because of your advanced age will definitely increase the chance!! Hoping march is your month. Make sure to follow the TWW thread when you are in your TWW it helps so much to pass the time and see people with positive tests and to get through the excruciating time where you analyze everything. That is what we do in our household. Oh your back hurts you must be pregnant. Oh you had night sweats that is typical of your period. You know just analyzing everything. We are in our TWW test on Monday to see if we are pregnant. Hoping to see two lines. Take care and keep us posted. These boards are a life saver.
  • Elliejo it is very exciting and yes they do move very fast. We were quite surprised and it just so happened that my next cycle was due to start a few days after the appointment so it worked out well. The Dr. asked if I wanted to be aggressive right away and I said ABSOLUTELY!!! So as of right now we are going to start with 100mg of Clomid and a trigger shot. However, I would assume that if any of my test results come back less than optimal the course of action may change. I am waiting on a call from the RE's office with my AMH results, they said they were expecting them today. EEEeeeeek!!! I am SOOOOO impatient! I want to know but at the same time I am scared to know! What a roller coaster! I am sending you lots of baby dust and positive pregnancy vibes during your TWW! I can't wait to hear that you got your +++++++!!! Keep me posted!!!! :)
  • How did your tests come out? Everything good to go for you all? I am glad your doctor gave you the option to start out aggressive. They want us to do three unmedicated cycles before switching over to clomid. So we are. We are on our third attempt. Third time is a charm right? We have always used a trigger as we couldn't pick up ovulation on a OPK. I think it is good to trigger. It forces you to ovulate and you can get timing down. A lot of this is timing and hope that the swimmers can find the egg. Who knows. We test Monday. So friction nervous and excited.
  • Well my test results are in!!!

We don't meet with the RE to go over the results until next week but, based on my research, I think these #'s may be pretty good, especially considering my age.

    TSH - 1.14
    FSH - 6.3
    LH - 4.2
    Prolactin - 4.8
    Estradiol - 53
    AMH - Normal

Did you test???????? I'm anxious to know!!!!
  • I have no clue what any of that means. Lol.

We got a BFN even when all the signs were pointing to pregnancy. We are devastated. Taking a few months off to meet with the doc pick a new donor and spend time connecting in Jamaica for a week. So there have been a ton of tears here. No positivity today to pass on today. Tomorrow will be different.
  • How you doing babydreams? When do you start with the insemination process and joining us lovely women in the TWW. I am so glad to get back in there in May when we are less stressed. Less pressure and expectation. We are hoping our time is soon. Feeling more positive and can send some positivity your way. And Feb 26th is right around the corner to go over all the results! We see our RE on April 4 and it cannot come soon enough. Anyways, I hope you are doing well and your baby dreams become a reality very soon.
