CCB: I was considering this donor, but looking at his weight and height I'm wondering if he is over weight? I did his BMI and it is over 30. Can you tell me more about his body frame and muscular build? Health is very important to both me and my husband.

Standard BMI isn’t the best measure to use as you are searching through donors because it doesn’t take into account body type, muscle mass, or age. As you go through the selection process, I would suggest checking out the staff impressions which sometimes mention the donor’s build, the donor profile which provides bone structure and athletics, and also the extended profile which includes diet and exercise. These items should give you more of a complete picture of the donor.
Donor 12231 was a competitive swimmer in high school which is an indicator that he was fit back then, but he donated in his early thirties, has medium bone structure, and specified on his profile that he occasionally exercises and has a fair diet. Lifestyle choices are a common cause for weight gain, but keep in mind that he was evaluated by our medical director and was in good health when he was donating.
If you have any questions regarding the donor’s health or family history, I would encourage you to speak with one of our genetic counselors. You can contact our Genetics Department at 877-743-6384.
Best of luck with your donor search!
