How much information is verified?

I have a few questions.

1) CCB does run criminal background checks, right?

2) How do you verify that donors are truly attending a university or have graduated?

3)How common are mistakes like mixing up an eye color? If a donor had brown eyes, and checked blue eyes on his profile I assume the staff would notice, correct?

I'm always super paranoid! I know not everything will be perfect, but those all seem like reasonably easy things to verify.
Thank you!

  • Hi Lindsey -

    1) We do not run criminal background checks on our potential donors. We require all of our donors to be attending or to have graduated from a 4-year university. Most of our qualified donors are currently in college, grad school, or recently graduated from a university. In addition to these institutions having their own set of acceptance criteria, we have an extensive screening process where we accept less than 1% of applicants.

During the 4-5 month qualification process, potential donors are thoroughly interviewed by different staff members, including donor coordinators, genetic counselors, and CCB affiliated physicians. Since 99% of applicants are disqualified and we do not have to provide them with the reason, there is no hesitation to disqualify an applicant due to inconsistencies in his answers, his demeanor, or even the way he interacts with the staff.

    2) We verify the donor’s enrollment in a 4-year university through requests for transcripts and/or copies of degrees.

    3) The donor coordinator meets with the donor so she is able to verify the donor’s eye color in person.
