Anyone TTC w/ Crohn's or Colitis

I was wondering if there is anyone TTC with Crohn's or Colitis? Do you know anybody who has had one of these and had a successful pregnancy? I got pregnant very easily on both IUI's, but had very early miscarriages. I knew the whole time that I had digestive upset, but did not think it was severe enough to interfere. Well, it turns out that it has. Just looking for some insight on TTC with this. Thanks!!!!

  • yes i had a successful pregnancy and i have colitis..my daughter just turned one..and now im 10 weeks pregnant again..i actually feel like i dont have colitis when im pregnant...although i did have one breakout during my pregnacy with my daughter and they gave me some steriods and i got better..
  • This is good information. I have colitis as well, and currently take Lialda daily to keep it in remission. Lialda hasn't been tested in pregnant woman, so I'm going to have to check with my GI specialist to see what to do. Lialda has been like a miracle for me, so I hate the idea of having to stop it and risk another flare up!
  • Great!!! I am currently on Entocort for Crohn's. I am going through the diagnostic process and hope to get to the bottom of it as I can't wait to get back to TTC. I have had a colonoscopy, endoscopy and a CT in 5 weeks. I hope the miscarriages were caused from the intestinal inflammation and once I get it under control can stay pregnant next time. I am undergoing some very detailed bloodwork and will hopefully have a diagnosis and start TTC in August. With the Lialda do you have any bad days at all? On the Entocort I have had 7 bad days out of 20. I am excited that I have had so many good days, but I am still sick a lot.
  • Well now Im 11 weeks pregnant and I'm having a little flare up...nothing bad..not bad enough to call a doctor..I take Asacol..when I get a flare up I just take extra pills and if Im lucky it goes away..at one point before I got pregnant the first time..the GI had put me on 6MP along w the Asacol..it had warnings on the lable not to take while pregnant or trying to concieve..I stopped taking it against his advice..he said the warnings are there but I should'nt be worried..I was not willing to take that chance..I have a co worker w colitis also..she is on a drug that has warnings about pregnancy and her doctor also said to ignore those warnings..
  • As long as I'm taking the Lialda, I don't even feel like I have colitis. My last major flare up was about 2 years ago, and it was severe - I was so sick that I was barely functioning for about 6 weeks. I started Lialda, and felt completely healthy within about a week. After years of treating it with suppositories and enemas (which never really helped, and sometimes even seemed to make it worse), just the idea that I could treat it with daily pills, much less pills that actually worked, truly felt like nothing less than a miracle. I know crohn's is usually a lot more serious than colitis, though. Anyway, apparently Lialda HAS been tested in pregnant animals with no ill effects, it just hasn't been tested in human pregnancy. Sounds like there are risks with both conditions whether medicated or medicated, though I guess it makes sense to try to have it as under control as possible before TTC. Best of luck to both of you!
  • Thanks for the info..after I have this baby I will ask my GI about Lialda..as I do get a lot of flare ups with my current meds..I have been hospitalized quite a few times..even had blood transfusions so I can totally relate to you not be able to function for those 6 weeks Natalie..I cldnt eat for days on end and i would get high fevers and just shake like I'm freezing...and I could'nt do anything for months (the worst time)..so now that I'll have two little ones I can't be in the hospital..my Dr had said he'd like me to try Remicade because I should'nt have outbreaks as often as I do..I would eventually like to get the surgery to rid myself of this hopefully forever..I have heard very positive things about those who have had the procedure..I'm very scared though..but it may be worth it..on a side note..my Dad had this disease too..and he did'nt have an outbreak for 12 years..he was on the Asacol I take..well it's nice to meet people who can relate to this issue..I never would of thought it would be on this site though..lol..thanks shunah for bringing this up...and good luck on your ttc journey's
  • Thanks so much for responding to my post ladies!! I began TTC never knowing I could have something that may interfere with the TTC process. After finding this out I felt so lost because there is such a lack of info out there on this topic. I just felt like, oh gee now that I have to be on crazy meds and have this issue I will never get pregnant. The thought of that scared the heck out of me. I go to see my RE tomorrow to dicuss the results of my GI visits. I am nervous about what she may say.
Lialda sounds great!! This Entocort is helping, but this week I have been sick literally every other day and the side effects are not good. I would love something that makes me feel great for a longer period of time. I can't wait to talk to my GI about it. Do you have any side effects??
    Good luck ladies!!!!!
  • The most common side effect is gas, which I have noticed somewhat, but compared to a flare up, it is a small price to pay, and I'll take it!
