Question about vitamins and supplements

Hello I wanted to get the advice of some mothers who have been there done that.

I’m going to be doing IVF early to mid next year. I’ve been reading a lot about the procedure and nutrition, I wanted to know how far in advance should I start taking a multivitamin? Is there a brand you really like and trust? I’ve seen stuff on the news that says “oh the minute you start planning you need to start taking a multivitamin preferably a year in advance plus up your folic acid intake oh yea some non fish DHA is good idea too.” What are you opinions?

  • Ive heard that taking a prenatal vitamin, just has to be taken when your ttc, so when your pregnant it's in your system.

im taking nature made with added dha in it.it's a prenatal that is a liquid pill i got it from walgreens and i love them.

where did u hear that dha isnt good to take? nature made added it into the prenatal.
  • My RE said to start 3 months prior to my first IUI. I take CitraNatal Harmony. I took a few others that totally messed my stomach up. This one has been great though.

  • Thanks for the suggestions I usually have problems with regular vitamins they make my stomach do flips right now I’m taking emergen-c multivitamin plus and soon as I’m done with these 8 packets no more. But the box says it contains 500mcg of folic acid which is 125% of the daily value.

I was talking to my family practice doctor asking is there anything in my file that is a serious danger because I do have a uncle with downs I had a uncle who died young with a some kind of intestinal problem I know without a doubt I’m doing PGD. so we were discussion all that and vitamin and he looks at me and goes “you know what I don’t know let me grab this book I have and look it up and I’ll give you a call Monday and in my honest opinion I don’t think DHA helps a growing fetus.”
I’m one of those people I like to read up on things prepare early for some reason.
  • Well I like Women's One vitamins by Rainbow Light, they are gentle on your tummy. Plus you can pick them up at Walmart, CVS, or Whole Foods. Here is the link:

There are GREAT!!! and they do make a prenatal that you can take once you start TTC. The prenatal has ginger to help with the nausea!!

The prenatals that they give you at the Gyn have 1000mg of folic acid, so that is what you want to shoot for. Most over the counter only have 800mg but my doc says thats enough, prenatals dont have the correct levels of E or calcium so you may want to add a supplement for those.

My Dr. told me that the DHA helps with the baby's brain development, so you want to start those right before your proceedure. That way you get the full benefit. There is lots of info on this go to the babycenter.com website its very helpful:

  • I did IUI cycles and not IVF but 3 months prior to my first cycle I took:
    Vitamin D
    Vitamin C
    Vitamin E
    magnesium
    Flaxseed capsules
    Complex B
    cut down on caffeine

This regimen was based on a fertility book I read and I got pregnant first cycle after DH and I had tried for years. I did this same thing with my second pregnancy and it worked first cycle as well.
  • jjr3, wow...it sounds like you have had some really good luck with both of your pregnancies as I have seen your posts on all of the various discussions. That's wonderful, we can only hope that everyone has the luck you did.
  • Wednesday I start my pre pregnancy regimen I got my Women’s one a day and additional folic acid 400 mcg supplement so I’ll be getting about 800 mcg of folic a day, I’m going to see how my body tolerates that first because vitamins sometimes make me light sensitive and queasy. I’ve narrowed my list of donors from 6 to 2 and I’ve narrowed down my list of local fertility centers down to two. I’m going to request my pgd testing DVD this week since I’m on vacation until the end of the year and make. Oh and make sure my maternity insurance covers everything it should.
