Single Mom's To Be in PHX

Hello, are there any single mom's-to-be in the general PHX/Scottsdale area who are going through the donor sperm route?

I am a 39 yr SWF going the initial health assessment now. I am crazy to be doing this alone?

Would welcome any input or feedback.

Thanks, Mom to be in AZ!

  • I dont think you are crazy. just as long as you think of everything really well and make sure this is what you want beause once it is done you cannot go back.

I am in the process of finding someone and will be recieving a packet in the mail soon.

I am going through the same thing even though i am a lot younger than you. I can realate to wondring if this is the right to do alone.
  • I am in Phoenix and I am working on trying to conceive and I am also single. you are not alone trust me. I am in my late 30s and no longer going to put off motherhood because Im single. I am probably not going to do IUI right now and Im going to do this at home, with a donor, and see what happens. I did go to a RE and not sure if Im going to stick with him. Are you seeing a fertility specialist?
  • I am alomost 38 and am a single mom to be. Will be 10 weeks pregnant on Friday. It took me about 1 year of thinking about this before I began the process. I talked it over with my family and very close friends. They all gave me the thumbs up. I am so excited I decided to go through with it. It's a tough process on your body, can be very expensive and draining emotionally but well worth it. Single people who are waiting for the right guy shouldn't lose out on motherhood. Good luck.
  • I'm 39 and got pregnant on my 2nd IUI. I live in Phoenix and would be happy to share my experience with you if you are interested. I'm 36 weeks...due next month with a little girl. I can't wait! I did go to an RE to get a bunch of testing done and he also did my IUIs. I have found that I've gotten so more support than I ever expected from people I've told...and even those who weren't too sure about what I'm doing at first have really come around and seem genuinely excited for me. I wish you all the best of luck!
  • Thanks everybody for responding. Undoubtedly this is a life changing decision. It's good to know that there are other ladies out there going through the same experiences!
  • Would love to hear about your experience. I have gone to a known RE in the Valley and all tests came back perfect! Great news because I wanted to try the "natural" a couple of times before bringing in meds! How did things progress with you? As with you, I have a great support network and everybody is extremely excited. I have not had my last consult with my doc to come up with a game plan, but have a few donors in "my favorites". I am trying to time this whole thing right because of the holidays and ski trips planned, is timing ever right?!!? :)
  • Hi Claudia, glad to hear your tests came back good. Mine also came fine. I did two cycles - both medicated. I'm not sure it was necessary, but based on my age I didn't want to waste any time. Plus, my insurance covered the meds, which can be very expensive. My plan was to try 4 IUI medicated cycles and then re-assess.

Fortunately, I got a BFP on my 2nd try. I saw Dr. Craig (RE) in Tempe. I'm not sure who your RE is, but I really liked Dr. Craig. He wrote out several options for me and gave me stats for each. That is how I came up with my plan.

I'm glad to hear that you have a lot of support! That will be so helpful to you as you go through this journey.

And I agree, timing is never going to be "right". I thought about that a lot too because I had a bunch of trips, etc. planned. But then I just decided to start as soon as I could because there was no guarantee it would work the first time and getting pregnant was a higher priority for me than any vacations I had planned.

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions!
  • I am seeing Dr. Patel up in N.Scottsdale. I am supposed to call the first day of my next period to schedule a follow-up....you are absolutely right, there is no guarantee it will happen the frist time around so best to start asap! How many vials did you buy and did you choose and open or anonymous donor? I met a great gal on this forum in Boston and she just had her first IUI post meds...fingers crossed! She's 40 and is doing the single mom thing too!!

Well keep me in the loop!! :)
  • Claudia,

Awwwwwww, I just read your last post here and almost cried! You are so damn sweet and I am so lucky to have met you during this trying time. It's 7 dpiui today and still waiting! I can't wait to be pregnant and can't wait to be pregnant together with you!

    Jen
  • Claudia,
I bought 6 vials and I chose an open donor. I wasn't going to buy 6 but the donor I chose was running out of vials and plus, I could get a year of storage for free with the purchase of 6. Plus, I wasn't really sure how long it would take and if I would want to try for a 2nd child, etc. I chose an open donor just because I wasn't ready to make a decision for the baby to be. I figured that it wouldn't hurt to have that option for later if it's something important to the child. I didn't want to close that door and have regrets later. But I think it's a personal decision and there is no "right" answer. Good luck to you and Jennifer7170! I hope you both get a BFP soon!!!
  • Hi Ladies. I'm new to this site and considering single parenting. Any words of advice for getting started? Should I start with RE?
  • Teresa,

Hi, I am glad that you joined this forum. You will meet so many wonderful people here as I have. I guess the RE thing is the way to go, esp if you are over 35 yrs old. They are the doctors that will figure out what kinds of testing you will need before starting the process and then get you started in the right direction.

Where are you located? How old are you? I am 40 and went to an amazing RE who is doing everything she can to get me prego right away but also taking expense into account. That's actually unheard of since medicine really is a business just like any other but she is great! I am waiting to find out if my 1st IUI worked.

As for single parenting....if you are pretty independent and feel strong, have lots of support and your health.....my words of wisdom is to do it! I have always felt that having a "dad" for my baby would be my 1st choice but these days, not so sure anymore and really, it's been my life dream to be a mom and it just needs to happen, with or without. Well, I guess without :-)

Feel free to write back if you want to chat more on a personal level. I know it's hard to open up on a message board.

    Talk Soon,
    Jen (Jennifer7170@msn.com)
  • I too will hopefully be a single mom in AZ. I'm 38 and got tired of waiting for the perfect time. Had my 1st IUI today with #11812. Good luck everyone!!
  • Hi, I am in AZ as well...sitting here filling out my final paperwork. My "boys" are in my shopping cart now. Going in for my first IUI mid-January...keep us posted when you are prego! What RE did you go to?
  • Well first time didn't work :( Will try again.. Meeting with Dr tomorrow for our next plan of attack :) Mid Jan for you. Good luck. Hope to hear your prego soon. I've been using Dr Rychlik in Scottsdale, who are you using?
  • Hi! I am sorry to hear about that...chin up, the stats state that they don't "stick" the first time around...my girlfriend Jen from Boston who is on this forum as well had the same situation and she went in today for her second IUI. Fingers crossed...

I am using Dr. Patel off of Princess Dr. A bit more conservative than Rychlik. I know him professionally through work, you are in good hands!

Let me know if you want to meet up or chat sometime, I am here in Scottsdale. Good luck and keep us posted on what's being going on! :O) Claudia
  • I am a patient of Dr Nemiro in Scottsdale. My gyn refers patients to Dr Craig but I dont like his staff, and I was going to see Dr Johnson at ARMS but cant keep paying out of pocket for consults. Dr Nemiro has been very nice and generous and he does have a good IVF success rate so if I go that route I will use him. I am having issues with ovulation and keep missing cycles. Dr Nemiro wants to do some IUI's on me but I want to try naturally first. This is so frustrating. If any of you have success with IUI's and have any donor sperm left please let me know. Dr Nemiro says he has some thats been donated but not sure if I want any of them. Thank you!!!!!
  • Hi Kris,

Sorry it has been a while since I checked the site....how have things been progressing? I know things can be so frustrating but be patient and keep the stress level down and just take it day by day...you have to or you will drive yourself nuts! I would probably say that if he wants to try with the donated sperm and is giving a you a heck of a deal, do it! A girlfriend of mine went with her husband to Nemiro. She's 43 and tried 3x with IVF and nothing came to fruition, so now they are taking a break and trying things "naturally".

I did have my first IUI on 1/10 and am supposed to take a preg test tomorrow but will wait until the end of the week. I went the natural route as well, no meds. Wanted to try this route a few times before moving onto meds.

Good luck and lemme know what's going on!
  • Hi Shaz326,

Well, it worked the first time around for me...I'm officially pregnant! I am a bit in shock because I did not think it would happen so fast but I guess it was just the my time. When you going in for #2?
  • Congratulations Claudia.az !!! I'm so excited and happy for you.

Will try for lucky #3 in a few weeks. Hopefully I'll have some good news too : )
  • Congrats Claudia! Did you use sperm from this site? I am getting an HSG on Friday since my first cycle with Femara (trying naturally) failed, but it does appear to be working. I am dreading this exam but I am going to take some Vicoden before hand so I wont be so anxious. I need to know that my tubes are clear and stuff before I have any IUI's with Dr Nemiro. Has he suggested donor eggs for your friend? 43 seems kind of like the cut off for using someone's own eggs. I do hope she succeeds in getting PG.

    Keep us up to date!
  • Thanks Girls! I am very excited though taking day by day...I think at 9 weeks after the potentially miscarriage state is over, I will be alot more anxious. First ultrasound for #'s and placement is on Monday then another week another ultrasound for measurements...I feel very lucky it was so easy so I wish both of you the best in success this time around....Femara has worked for 2 other girl friends I know here (one is pregnant with twins!) So fingers crossed! Nemiro knows what he's doing...how was the IUI? Gotta love the cramping...call me here locally if you want ...602 620 8009 and perhaps we can meet for coffee this upcoming week! Enjoy your weekend-Claudia...
  • Hi Shaz...# 3...well you and Jennifer7170 have lots in common, she's going on #3 hopefully this upcoming week! Sending prayers and baby dust both of your way!!!Did you join the Facebook group yet? Maybe the three of us (Miss Kris, you and I) can all meet up next week since we are all in Scottsdale...what donor did you go with? I am with 11521.
  • Hi Claudia,

Congradulations!! Hello to the rest of you on here. I am single in Southern California, tired of waiting for Mr. Right and I'm 41...sounds like I am not alone. I began the process in December 2010 and due to start my first IUI after my next cycle... probably mid March. It's exciting but scary. I had never tried getting prego before because I wanted everything to be "right." Therefore, my RE and i don't really know if I will have "trouble" getting pregnant, however my RE wants to take an aggressive appraoch due to my age and due to my low egg count. As if this wasn't stressfull enough, picking a donor is so overwhelming!! I look forward to a positive outcome and a baby blessing!! Good luck to you all!!
  • Hi Girls,

A large group of mom's (mostly single moms and single mom's to be)are on FB on a secure, private group so we can all keep in touch that way. Let me know what each of your email addresses are and I will have an invite sent to you so you can join in. It's easier sometimes to just chat or email directly!

How's the progress Kris and Shaz?!? I have been released from Dr. Patel's care and will see Dr. Kwatra on March 15 for my OB care. Let's keep the baby dust flying!!! :) C
  • TTC sucks ass! lol. I think Ive had another failed cycle on Femara as I feel the symptoms of AF coming. I had some blood drawn a couple days ago to check progesterone, and when AF comes, I will get my AMH tested, and my FSH retested. I am going to see my RE about injectables, and doing some IUIs. I wish I could go right to IVF but dont have the money right now. Mini IVF may be possible in a few months. I am also going to schedule a laproscopy with my gyn to make sure I dont have endo or anything else going on. Thanks for asking.
  • Good luck and keep your chin up girl...all of this testing and rough times will be a distant memory once you hold you baby in your arms for the first time! Call if you need me...602 620 8009. Claudia
  • Hello Ladies,

I am moving to Phoenix next week from Dallas and am 5 weeks pregnant via sperm donor. Since I am new to the Phoenix area (I did live in Flagstaff for 16 years), I'm really looking forward to connecting with other single moms in town. Please let me know how I might get involved and/or support other women in the area. Thanks and hope to have the opportunity to meet some of you...

    Suzanne
  • HI Suzanne, call me when you are settled into town. I just got past my 2nd IUI (miscarried in March at 10 weeks) with a BFN test today...sux. Going for IUI 3 next month with a new donor. Call me 602 620 8009, Claudia
  • Hi Everyone!

I am new to this board and was excited to see that there are some SMC's in the PHX area. I just relocated to AZ to be close to family while I go through this process. Are there any formal groups of Single Mothers by Choice in AZ that any of you know of? I have just started trying (injectables & IUI) and would love to get advice and support from others doing the same. I noticed that no one has posted on this thread since June, but if anyone can put me in touch with someone locally, I would completely appreciate it. Thanks!

    Baby dust to everyone!
