CMV Changes

I was instructed to purchase CMV negative sperm, as I am CMV negative. I am certain that donor 12551 was listed as negative each time I purchased sperm. However tonight, when I came back on to report my pregnancy (yay!), he is listed as postive. I read another thread that explains that more detailed testing indicated he is negative. Do I need to be concerned or let my OBGYN know??

  • Hi G-

Congratulations on your pregnancy! That’s wonderful news!

There's no need to be concerned about the CMV change. We recently updated our website and changed the donor profile to display “CMV Total Antibody” instead of “CMV Status”. Donor 12551 tested CMV total antibody positive, but his confirmatory tests came back negative for both IgG and IgM, meaning the total antibody screening was incorrect. After review, our medical director reported that these results indicate that this donor has never been exposed to CMV.

These results are included on the Summary of Records which gets shipped with your specimen, so if your OBGYN performed your insemination, he/she may already have this document in your file. If not, please feel free to contact me and I can assist you further. Nicole@cryobank.com

As mentioned in the previous thread, the screening that the FDA mandates is not particularly accurate as it returns about 30% false positive results. Unfortunately, this can make it confusing, but it’s not something that you should be worried about.

    Best of luck with everything!

  • Hello,

I am thinking about using Donor 13236. Would you please tell me how many pregnancies he had?

    Thank you!
  • Hi Irlia -

Donor 13236 has 5 or more reported pregnancies.
