Second IUI Sperm Count

Hi Scott, I went in for my second IUI on Saturday, and was told the sperm count was 42 million, with 31% motility. Although the doctor seemed a bit unsure and advised me she would have the lab technician contact me, the last time I went they said the motility was 81%. Seems like an enormous difference, and has me feeling discouraged and upset. Can you shed some light on the matter, and if the motility is, in fact, only 31%, does this qualify for a refund? Thanks.

  • Hi Gltrbug -

Each individual number (count, motility) is part of the equation. Both are important.

In this case, you have nothing to be concerned about. That is plenty of quality swimmers. 31% of 42 still leaves you with about 13 million total motile sperm - well above the minimum guarantee and (medically speaking) more than enough for a successful pregnancy.

For the record, studies have actually shown that once you have over 5 million good swimmers, the chances of conception do not actually increase with more sperm.

    Good luck!
