How many?

Is it more beneficial to use the same donor several times or if one donor doesn’t work should you use a backup? Does it make any difference at all?

  • @Melissa.paige For the average, healthy woman it takes about 3-4 IUIs to achieve pregnancy. Many of our clients prefer to select one donor and use that donor for all of their cycles and future siblings, but if you have multiple donors that you like, you can certainly switch for each cycle. (Just please keep in mind that our donors sell out frequently and if you want to use the same donor for another pregnancy later on, the only way to guarantee availability is by purchasing vials and storing them: https://www.cryobank.com/services/additional-services/family-today---family-tomorrow/)

All of donors go through the same extensive screening process. Less than 1% of applicants become California Cryobank donors. Choosing one donor over another shouldn't impact your chance of pregnancy.

A 2001 study determined there are 5 predictive variables for the outcome of IUIs with donor semen in terms of clinical pregnancy rate: Number of treatment cycles, number of mature follicles, the cycle day for insemination, the occurrence of ovulation at the time of insemination and the age of the woman.
