Trying with PCOS

Hi all!

I wanted to post and see if there were any others out there going through the same thing as me. I am 25, diagnosed with PCOS. I tried unsuccessfully for 3 years go get pregnant with my now exhusband. We stopped short if IUI and IVF due to the insurance not covering the procedures.

I am now starting over by myself, which I am thrilled about (no, really, I am being serious!). I am currently weighing my options with trying IUI or going directly to IVF. I will have to have the decision made by the end of May since that is when I start the FSH injections again. Finding a donor is getting a little stressful and its hard to find people that understand the process that I am going through. I would love to meet some women that are in the same situation!

  • Hi Sarah, I just came across this message system today. Even after being a CCB member for a year. There is a Facebook group for women like us doing it on our own. See the other threads. As for IVF v. IUI you have to look at what insurance covers, costs. I did an IVF last year and it was a complete failure and I ended up spending an dnot getting back enough money to have covered 8 IUI procedures! (the average # of IUIs to conceive is 6 ... !!). Do your homework, read and keep reading and speak to as many women in the same situation.

As a side comment what is your FSH and Estrogen levels? (AMH if you have that too.)

Me: FSH: was 19 this month 8 !!! (I think it's the DHEA I'm taking)
Estrogen 114 (dual cysts on each ovary. Now on BPCs to get rid of them) and my AMH was .3 (not good).

My next IUI will be 300IU Gonal F 2x a day.

    Best of luck!!
  • Hi Sarah, we're about the same age(26). I also have PCOS. I have done 11 IUIs, the 7th resulted in a pregnancy but I lost my little baby boy at the 4th month. I tried 4 more IUIs, and 3 natural cycles...no luck. I wish I wouldn't have wasted so much time with IUI because the costs have added up especially taking FSH (Follistim). Now,I'm considering IVF, but I'm drained emotionally and financially.

Honey I know exactly wha you are going through I am close to your age in fact I am younger than you and I was trying with my ex we knew each other for five years and dated for almost 2 years and then started trying to get pregnant I got diagonsed with PCOS around the time I turned 18 and it was a nightmare I was so scared my obgyn sat there and explained to me exactly what it was and where I had to go to get help then before I got the chance to tell him we broke up due to the fact that our relationship wasn't working out and he tried to say he wasn't ready but it was his idea to try and have a baby and I knew i always wanted to be a mom anyways now I decided to continue the process alone and I am working with my doctors tryign to get me to ovulate threw pills and then we will see from there how it goes if I ovulate we are going to then do an IUI. I am happy to be doing this alone because I know I am going to be the best mother to my child and I won't have to worry about the father up and deciding to just leave but it would be nice to have other young women here to support me please feel free to get back to me asap I'd love to see what you have to say and good luck!!! --- From Tiff
  • I have been diagnosed with PCOS around the age of 15 and now I am 26. I plan on trying in about a year and a half. After reading so many posts about women trying with PCOS. The most successful births have been with those who have lost the weight. I know for me I am overweight and insulin resistant which is one of the main characteristics of pcos.. Since this syndrome will reverse itself with the weight loss, I am starting early. I know that the most effective way before I go spending crazy amounts of money is to get myself as small as possible to get my body to release the insulin on its own and to balance out with the androgen levels..

Basically what I am saying is you are still young and its tough for women like us.. I know for me it's the weight and anything I have to do to improve my chances I will do.. but if the weight is not an issue for you.. maybe talking to your doc to see how you can reverse the issues that are causing you to not get pregnant..

    Good luck girl..
