Siblings Only Determination?

I was wondering how does CCB determine when a donor is no longer available for new clients and only available for sibling use. Is it by number of live births, number of reported pregnancies, number of individual families purchasing vials, or something else? Thanks!

    Hi Tffo -

For many years, CCB has been working hard to limit the number of potential offspring per donor. Our maximum goal is 25-30 families worldwide per donor. (On average, it ends up being closer to about 12-15 families.)

To control these numbers, we limit the amount of vials that we collect from each donor. We do not wait for birth reports. In addition to controlling our inventory from the start, we do our best to monitor pregnancies and will limit the donor for sibling use should a donor's reported pregnancies reach a certain point.

As you may know, we offer a vial buyback program and these sibling restrictions may occur around the time that we start to receive vials back into our inventory.

Sibling restrictions can also occur for donors that have few reported pregnancies. On occasion, we may have a donor with very limited inventory/buyback vials about to be released and clients with a pregnancy/child by that donor waiting for additional vials. Also, any donor that is reactivated will also be limited for sibling use. (You can read more about the reactivation process here: http://www.cryobank.com/Services/Post-Conception-Services/Donor-Reactivation/)

While we understand that new clients can become emotionally attached to a donor, it is a priority for us to maintain our family unit limits. The insemination process can be unpredictable, and we offer programs such as Family Today/Family Tomorrow, Vial Buyback, and Vial Exchange which help you secure vials of your favorite donor for the future and provide some flexibility in case your plans change.
