How long is donor sperm good for when frozen properly?

My RE says frozen donor sperm is good for a long time....he has several vials that have been donated from other women and couples, and they are available free of charge. Some have been stored since 97, some as recent as 2010. Does the length of time frozen affect numbers at all? Thank you-

  • Hi Miss-

Once sperm is frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen, it is viable for an indefinite amount of time. Once thawed, there is no measurable difference in "quality" betweeen sperm that was frozen one year ago or ten years ago.

Vials that are kept in storage at our facility have a specimen guarantee because we can confirm that they have been monitored and properly stored in liquid nitrogen. But, once vials are shipped out and stored long term at a physician's office we can no longer vouch for the quality.

If you decide to use your RE's vials, it's important to make sure that you contact us to report a pregnancy.

    Best of luck,

    Nicole
